I saw "The Whale Rider" this evening... heck of a film. Imagine Disney done RIGHT. American Splendor was one of the trailers, and it looks to be a fun ol' flick itself.

y'know, i'm kinda glad to hear someone else say that about The Man in the High Castle. It definitely wasn't my favorite, but i feel almost as if i'm blaspheming because it was the Hugo award winner and such. i thought there were others that were much, much better.
1) in the theater? Two Towers. at home, Fear of a Black Hat. I thought Two Towers was more noticeably long than Fellowship, and overall not as good. still enjoyable, though. as for Fear of a Black Hat...well, it's a classic

So, the eyes are okay. I can't see super-great right now. My right eye is pretty great. My left is still blurry. "Your My Best Friend" has been featured in the Simpsons and in a Yahoo! commercial recently. I'm always like "Hey ::tug on sleeve:: that's Queen! That's Queen!"
Given that they were only moderately popular in America and insane-o superstars everywhere else in the world (and pretty much musical gods in Britain) I'm always happy when they get some play over here.
John Deacon was a way overlooked member of Queen, but I guess he got as much notice as he cared to get. He never persued a solo career (beyond a single project with The Immortals) and never did interviews (less so than the rest of the band did, who tried to avoid interviews themselves) and what he's up to now, who knows. I heard he still does some spot work with the remaining members of Queen whenever they get together.

Circa '81, Black Flag attracted a bunch of ignorant johnny-cum-lately weekend "punks" to their shows that just wanted to beat the shit outta each other in the mosh pit. Every other Flag show ended in a riot or police confrontation of some kind. They basically wrecked the L.A. scene that had been pioneered by great bands like X, The Bags, The Alleycats, etc.
All the fucking football player types loved Rollins 'cause he was like one of them...stoooopid and full of testosterone-fueled rage. They were basically considered a total poser band that could barely even play until Damaged came out. Damaged was sorta like GI (the first Germs album) when it came out. A total shock outta left field from a band that nobody really believed would translate to vinyl. Obviously, since Darby died, the Germs never followed up on GI. I would assert that Blag Flag never meaningfully followed up on Damaged either. I really don't think they ever recorded another decent album. I personally, find Rollins to be a joke. His "poetry" is hokey in the extreme and he has has no real musical talent.
D. Boon would have matured into a major artist if he had lived longer. The self-imposed strictures of the Minutemen's style (ultra-short songs, no production, etc.) prevented the full realization of D's songwriting vision. I believe that as he matured as an artist he would have grown more comfortable with a more "professional" approach and would have recorded his own "Nevermind" eventually. Plus, the Minutemen were supporters of the L.A. scene and were genuinely cool and unpretentious people. Just my opinion (of course, I'm always right ).
