Well, it's cold in New York. As in most of the rest of the country, as far as I can tell. So unfortunately, the much awaited SG dinner out did not materialize. But maybe later.... we'll see.

I saw two movies in the last two days - tonight I saw The Fog of War, and yesterday I saw Big Fish. The Fog of War was...

That sounds like a nice date. As someone who's been on one date his entire life, I find descriptions of them rather poignant.

Looking forward to the eventual SGNY dinner. I think you're going to have to get people to really pin down some RSVPs. Have you heard minimalism's story?
cyber_faust:
Hi. Enjoyed your review of the movies. "Fog of War" is on my must see list.

I practice taoist (daoist) meditation, as well as some more traditional western practices. The chem/bio study of the changes that happen as a result of a change in the rate of breathing is fascinating.

Well, I'm in a radically differnt discipine, but I could probably give some advice about the job interview process, and of course, office politics robot

Wow. Ouch. Had my weekly lab meeting this morning. One of the postdocs was giving a presentation, and it just happened to be the one person in the lab who I really intensely dislike, everyone else is cool. She's always saying how great she is because she finished her PhD in three years (in Australia, because they only make people stay in grad school that...

in the academic world, a response like that is the only thing that can keep you sane after a while. something to remeber everytime I look back on grad school with nostalgia. of course, a faculty position brought a demension of politics all its own....

Yeah, postponement sounds like a good idea...very nice try though, and a good idea.
I managed to get myself in on another drug meal at Union Pacific tomorrow night, so I cant complain. I'm such a pharmaceutical ho-bag.

So for those of you who weren't convinced by the DNA strand tattoo, I now offer incontrovertible evidence that I am a MEGA-dork.

Saturday morning, I woke up at 9AM (to hear the radio announce that it was 1 degree in central park) so that I could go to Lincoln Center and see... all three Lord of the Rings movies in a row (that means...

Damn, Sorcha is too fast for me.

OK, so I got around to writing part of one my new pieces. Here's one I'm sure you can all relate to: why working sucks. Actually, I'd love to hear from anyone who has similar/better stories, I'm sure they're out there. Hell, my mother worked as a factory line worker in a bubble gum cigar factory, which tops...

Another day, and again essentially nothing accomplished. This time I had a plan - I was supposed to be doing a behavior experiment on my mutant mice all afternoon. I went down to the behavioral facility, and of course, the activity monitoring equipment was no longer working. Dammit. Which is why I had so many damned posts in CE today, because there was really nothing...

In a nutshell, they are renegotiaing the terms of the contract, you can accept or not. Sometimes what they do is legitimate, sometimes its questionable, but they pretty much bank on the notion that so long as their plocies aren't so out of line and universal that it would trigger a class action lawsuit nobody is going go to the trouble of suing them. ISPs are worse. They make unilateral decisions all the time that are illegitimate, but as the only recourse you really have is to sue of a refund of that months payment, they usually get away with it. in either case your continued use of the service is considered ratification of the new terms. There was no such trigger event to inicate acceptance of your offer so they have declined to accept your new terms.

The military OTOH is quite different, because you cant get out of the "contract". They say "Yeah it was a two year enlistment, but now its four." With any other part, you can simply say "Nah, fuck off, you breached the agreement her's your uniform back." Not so with military contracts. Military contracts youre bound to perform regardelss of how they change the terms (for the most part, there are constitutional and federal law limitations)

The party is tonight (the 9th) and then dancing at City Club (goth/industrial) on Saturday. love

I'm having an 80s party next year. Mark your calendar. biggrin

I am a lazy sack of shit. That's all there is to it. It's now 2:30pm and I've gotten pretty much nothing at all done today. Nor did I get anything done yesterday. I had a whole bunch of cells prepared for electrophysiological recordings, and they all died. Sucks. And I can't prepare any more until next week, so I'm back to writing again. Which...

Sorry about your cells dying. I hope you don't get attached to them.

Big Trouble in Little China? Yes, I have owned this DVD for a long, long time now. It truely is a great movie. I am now watching something called FireFly on DVD. A friend of mine loaned it to me. It's one of the shows that had 13 episodes on Fox before being cancelled. Created by the guy who created Buffy.

I have to say, DVD is one of the best things to happen to TV. I haven't had TV in over 3 years now. I hate it with a passion. But to watch my favorite shows without commercials...there's just something so right about that!

Another lazy sunday afternoon. I can't seem to stop myself from waking up any earlier than 1pm. Which presents a problem, since I have a 9AM meeting tomorrow morning. Well, things will just have to work themselves out, I guess.

I have finally conquered mount laundry. Feeling a bit like sir Edmund Hillary, in the last clothes of desperation, the only clean ones left, I...

Yeah, the Mars landing is beyond cool. It interesting. Now there are I think 2 probes circling mars, and soon to be two landers. Be nice to build up a little robotic network around the place. I had a journal entry a while back saying I preferred robotic exploration to human. You have any opinions on this?

There is another probe set for Mercury. I don't see the reason for it, but I guess that's why I don't work at NASA. smile

I promised that the entry on the 31st would be the last whiny one (for a while) and god damn it, I'm going to deliver on my promise.

So what do you all think of rainbows? I think they're really pretty. OK, maybe not.

Anyway, New Year's was the typical debacle, but actually was fairly fun. After having two nights of way too much drinking...

A short, stumpy, much-delayed journal entry.

Oh well. Between holidays, houseguests, traveling back and forth from Pennsylvania and my grandfather's 90th eeek birthday party, it's been a busy week and a half.

Got a great haul for christmas this year. As usual, it consisted almost entirely of books and DVDs, but lots of good stuff. For DVDs I got the third season of the Family Guy,...

As I stood in line at the liquor store I heard the man in front of me say to the clerk, "welp, I guess it's amateur night tonight, I'ma stayin' home." He laid down a couple of bills for his JD and left after that.

Sorry I've been scarce, I keep meaning to comment on the virus thing you wrote for me. Can I get an extension? wink

Oh, and your entry reminds me of "Sex in the City". As much as I adore that show and the characters, their shallow natures really irk me sometimes.

Before you even ask, I'm a cross between Samantha and Miranda. wink
