Attn: SGKazoo people who planned to see Joe Friday this Friday at Club Soda.
Silvercord just informed me that the show has been moved to Saturday night (same venue). I'm still not sure what time it starts, but 8:00 is a safe bet.
I dragged my keyboard out of the closet tonight and discovered the batteries are not dead. I played a few songs, and it turns out I'm not as rusty as I'd thought. It's still not a piano, but it'll do for now. It's also fun to play some of the songs using different "voices" (like a fantasy orchestra for "Moonlight Sonata").
My psych paper is almost finished. The title is "Effects of Psychotherapy on Comorbid Conditions in Generalized Anxiety Disorder". It sounds like a lot, but it's really nothing, and it's boring me to tears.
While talking to silvercord about some things I've dealt with the past two nights, I realized psych probably isn't the field for me. Sure, I have the knowledge and insight needed, but I have WAY too much empathy. If I spend an hour or so talking to someone and helping them, I feel accomplished and happy, but I also feel drained and helpless. It hurts me when I can't heal someone, and it takes a lot of my energy to deal with their emotions and then mine when I take those on as my own (see definition of "empathy" if you have no idea what I mean).
I know that my patients/consumers probably wouldn't affect me as much as loved ones and friends since I wouldn't have a personal attachment, but I have to imagine I would develop one after a while. I just don't think I could handle that level of empathy forty to sixty hours per week without suffering some ill effects, and it wouldn't be fair if I had nothing left to give to them.
I'm glad I figured this out before graduation. I was thinking of turning my minor into a second bachelors and then pursuing grad school, but I think I'll stick with English after all. Teaching still requires empathy to be truly effective, but it doesn't have quite the persistent onslaught of human emotion.
I don't know... maybe I'm way off-base on all of this and I should just get drunk and think about it later.
Silly Sorcha Story: I have a weird compulsion with those dots on the top of plastic soda lids you get from the gas station or a fast food place. You know the ones that have "cola", "diet", "other", etc... anyway, I push all of them in every time I get a soda, and I don't even realize I'm doing it most of the time.

Tough job, I couldn't do it. Give me my microscope and leave me be!
