I can't believe I still haven't met you. Hopefully you can make it down to Atlanta for the holiday party this year. I was going to go to the Charlotte halloween party last weekend but didn't make it

In Canada we have OHIP to cover our visits to the doctor. It's paid thru our taxes, no insurance. As long as we maintain our tax returns each year we're covered. Despite the state of the Canadian dollar, it doesn't last that long up here either. The older you get the more debt you create. The best thing you can do at your age is create an "Emi Tax". Save between 5 and 15% of each paycheque and put it in a savings account and FAHGET ABOUT IT. When your done with school and on your way to becoming a career women, you will have a nice little rainy day fund. Your school years are definetely the years you determine what is "fat" and what is necessary. In general, your fixed expenses per month should be roughly half of your monthly income. I wish I could pay off my computer in one shot, but inflation is the true bitch in life.

I'm sorry you're so stressed out Emi, that really sucks.
If I win the lottery jackpot tonight, I'll pay off your bills and stuff because that's the kind of person I am. I would expect nothing in return, because that wouldn't be fair to you. I would do it merely because I enjoy helping people and I like seeing people as happy and stress free as possible because it makes the world a better place to me. And if you wanted to do something in return, help someone else that needs it, even if it's just a ride to work or something. Making people smile is probably one of the most rewarding things you can do, not just rewarding for you, but rewarding for them as well as the people around them that day and possibly for days, weeks or months.

I'd say to get a realtor before buying a house. A good one will help guide you through the process, make recommendations, and try to keep you from any "gotchas" when buying. Although it is a little extra money, always always get an inspection to make sure things are solid. Usually if you can come up with 20% of the price of the house you will get a cheaper mortgage rate, although there's ways around that too. Foreclosed houses are usually trashed by the evictees, so make sure to check them out thoroughly.

Having gone through this myself (a very good experience) with our house, and several friends, I do have some info on the process, so feel free to ask.

Shared commune can be tricky. I hate to say you 'might' be required to pay the extra $70/month. The $70 extra MUST be itemized or explained on the lease you signed. It appears your agreement may be similar to renting a dorm room within a unit that has shared amenities (kitchen, bath, laundry and livingroom or den). If this is the case, the $70 may be for your part of the utilities and/or maintenance. She cannot not make a profit from your rental agreement, that is illegal and usually under the table. (Receipts would cover your ass if it's under the table). Most colleges have legal aid or services that are free to students you should spend the time to seek the proper help on this. Other steps are talk to the owner to see if she is violating her lease by renting this room to you. She probably is allowed to rent it, but there may be terms she must meet. If your lease agreement with her is valid, you need to find a way to break it. I'm sorry I can't be of any real help. I sincerely hope this works out for you.
