lawyers, realtors, anyone who knows about leases -
i moved into an apartment about 2 weeks ago and signed this contract with the person on the lease that i would pay their rent etc until july. it wasn't a notarized contract or a contract written up by the apartment complex, she wrote it herself and i kind of noticed it was a little unofficial looking but not enough to say anything about, plus i NEEDED to live somewhere fast. she told me rent was $420 a month and that i need to MAIL IT TO HER personally. well, i look on the website and the rent here is $350, NOT $420. so i go directly to the apartment people and pay THEM $350 and they said i'm square with them because that's all i/she whatever, owes them for rent every month. so what i want to know is there any way she can legally collect another $70 for rent on an apartment that costs $350 for which i, not her, am paying the rent? does that contract, since it's not notarized or from the building itself stand? i mean she did lie that rent was $420. and also, she still has a key to this place and gave me a duplicate. she also gave HER BOYFRIEND THAT DOESN'T LIVE HERE AND NEVER HAS a key and he came on in one day and did his laundry! we have to pay overages on utilities if we go over...and with SIX people doing laundry in a 4 person apartment i have a feeling the utilities might go over.

Shared commune can be tricky. I hate to say you 'might' be required to pay the extra $70/month. The $70 extra MUST be itemized or explained on the lease you signed. It appears your agreement may be similar to renting a dorm room within a unit that has shared amenities (kitchen, bath, laundry and livingroom or den). If this is the case, the $70 may be for your part of the utilities and/or maintenance. She cannot not make a profit from your rental agreement, that is illegal and usually under the table. (Receipts would cover your ass if it's under the table). Most colleges have legal aid or services that are free to students you should spend the time to seek the proper help on this. Other steps are talk to the owner to see if she is violating her lease by renting this room to you. She probably is allowed to rent it, but there may be terms she must meet. If your lease agreement with her is valid, you need to find a way to break it. I'm sorry I can't be of any real help. I sincerely hope this works out for you.
