Oh I'm obsessing because it's the Finno-Ugric language I've decided upon learning.
Then you made a good choice, as finnish really is a rather lovely language (admitted, I'm a bit biased). Not exactly easy to learn ofcourse, but shouldn't be too daunting for a motivated linguist. And with enough Koskenkorva, it becomes distinctly easier to speak finnish.
I choose a language based on it's native culture, not its export culture.
Yeah, that's why I tried to choose some bands that might represent finnish culture and the different aspects of it a bit better than Lordi or Hedningarna (who are originally from Sweden I believe). And Paavoharju, Kuusumun Profeetta and (even) Rytmihiri are all very interesting even from a purely lyrical viewpoint, when you get down to it. Some excellent and interesting use of the finnish language there.
I'm not too knowledgeable on the subject of linguistics or language (despite having read a couple of basic introductions on the subject), but on finnish culture I can offer a few tips, opinions and recommendations if needed.

To be honest, I was so surrounded by gaijin that I didn't have to hear too much Tokyo-ben. I did make a point of using "ooki ni" whenever I could, though.

On your favorites list---is that Cunt by Inga Muscio? If so, I'm surprised. That book from what I can tell bears about as much similarity to real linguistics as Chariots of the Gods? does to archaeology.

Funny you should mention it, because I just had my first ice cream outing in a long time. The rainy season came early this year, but it was hot and sunny on Saturday. I went with a group of friends to this little road-side place where they sell hand-made gelato. I got murasaki-imo, kind of like a sweet potato flavor. Very yummy, and a lovely lavender color.
