My knees were getting cold. The frozen ground was starting to thaw and moisture was seeping through the blanket. I kept low. I kept quiet. My nose was running. I sniffled.

Even though I was hiding behind a bush, I knew they knew I was there.

They were watching me.

I held my ground. I knew they'd take the bait, it was just a matter of time.

Honestly, I felt like Wile E. Coyote... crouched down, holding onto the string of the drop trap.

Drop trap

This past Sunday, I was a huntin' feral cats with a local cat rescue. This rescue gathers up feral cats, takes them to the vet to be fixed, vaccinated & dewormed, then releases them back into the colony where they were captured.

The spot we visited on Sunday has had 79 cats caught & released, not including the five we caught yesterday. Can you believe that? All in one mobile home park. It was really sad frown BUT, the good news is, progress is being made.

Using the drop trap, I was able to catch two kittens myself biggrin That was pretty cool. Even though they were young, they were completely wild, very aggressive. There's no way you could make a pet out of them. Within two weeks, they'll be back up with their colony - happy, but not making any more babies.

The rest of the cats were caught with a trap like this:

a humane trap (animal goes in for food, steps on pedal, cage closes)

Even though the trapping is done very humanely, the poor little things were just terrified. I felt pretty awful stressing them out so much... it's for their own good though. As I'm typing this, my Nermal is on my lap, purring away. I am glad I help to rescue kittehs.

We did visit a second colony of a reported 15 cats, but we weren't able to catch any. We left a drop trap to leave up - that way the people who feed them can put the food under the trap and the cats will get used to it. When we come back, we'll put the food in and drop the trap. S-M-R-T, huh?
