My big trip is coming up really fast. Since I'm moving into my mom's house, I need somewhere to store my stuff that I won't need til I get my own place. Unfortunately, the only bit of space there is, is the crawlspace under the house. It's really not bad, it's a dry area and my stuff will be safe. The thing is... it had RATS for like a year - pest control was in, sealed their entrance and all the rats are "gone" now (*ahem* that is to say that there are no living rats down there).
My mom, brother & I went down into "The Pit" yesterday to clean it up. It looks like we locked a crazy person down there... all the insulation is half ripped down, most stuff has been chewed and/or defecated on
We had to suit up for the job...

ugly hat, check

high tech foot coverings, check

white chick and gang sign, g-g-g-gang sign, check

I'm *so* getting some plastic paint and making a mini Artoo out of the new shopvac
I didn't take the camera down into the pit with me, I was afraid it would get gross. We pulled down all of the insulation (in the area we actually got finished), and bagged it. We also had to bag up all of our stuff that was ruined ~ all of our board games, and a Simon from the early 80's... our stuffed animals... so much stuff, even photos (it was a dry basement, so we never worried about them getting ruined due to floods - we never expected rats
).
Despite the masks, my brother's athsma acted up... but he was a real trooper and toughed it out as long as he could. We're barely a quarter finished
I suggested we refocus our efforts and just clear a space for my boxes (I'm leaving on Tuesday, so even if we work 8 hours a day til then, I srsly doubt we'd finish the whole thing). So long as we make sure it's absolutely sanitized and I lay a tarp down underneath, I'd be comfortable with having my possessions in plastic bins down there. The crawlspace still needs to be finished, of course, but I don't think we need to stress too badly about it right before I move.

My Grandad made it through his surgery ~ thanks to all of you who have left comments and good vibes, you guys are seriously amazing and a HUGE source of support. Thank you thank you thank you thank you!
His prognosis really isn't good... there was a massive tumour in his bladder, and they couldn't get it all. The doctor said that he would not do another surgery on him, due to his age and how serious the operation would be
He apparently held out his hands like he was holding a ball, and said that that was as much as he could get. Radiation is an option, but whether or not my grandfather will *want* to take that path at the age of 94 is another question. The doctor came to talk to him & my mother right after the surgery, and I guess my grandad was still groggy, because as of right now, he still believes that he has another surgery soon... that they'll be able to remove it all
My poor mom has to explain it to him, but she's waiting til the day before his post-op appointment to do so ~ if he finds out now that he's got a long road ahead of him, that he's too old for the surgical option... he might just give up.
