Fuck Time Warner Cable. That's all I have to say. My home internet has been out since Thursday, hence no journal entries, not much time on SG. So I'm doing a quick journal udpate from the lab, and hoping that I don't get in trouble with our network admin for accessing 'questionable' sites while at work. Oh well.

Ow. Got my new tattoo. It looks pretty cool, but burns like crazy. Well, I'll have to wait it out, I suppose.
I have that icky "buyer's remorse" type feeling that I always have after I do something permanent or semi-permanent to myself, I keep thinking "Do I really want this forever?" I seemed pretty sure when I decided to get it done. It'll pass....

Ack! I didn't answer your question. Naughty bunny.
I'm going Up North (always capitalized in Michigan) to visit my family. They do not have an internet connection, so I will be without IMs, email, and SG for about six days. I plan to do a lot of reading. Lots and lots of reading.
I'm not sure about New Year's Eve. I was supposed to spend it with my (now ex) boyfriend and our friends, but I'm not sure now... I'd still like to, but it might be Weird, and I don't want to make anyone's holiday Weird. So I'm not really sure. My mother said I could stay an extra week and celebrate with them, but as much as I love them... NO. I need the city. I need the noise. I need the internet. I need buildings taller than one story.

Many thanks to those of you slogged their way through my last little essay. I've posted a new essay for your perusing pleasure. Someone needs to freaking shut me up. Or maybe I just need an editor. Or a hobby or something. Anyway, they're starting to get longer. But at least that should keep the journals entries at a readable length.
So tomorrow I'm off...

I grew up near a nature preserve so vermin of all shapes and sizes isn't foreign. but now that I live in Brooklyn I see nary a one. roach, mouse, rat, nothing. the closest we get are the two little piece of crap gay dogs my future sister in law has. ugh. little ankle biters.
another entertaining read. good visual with the cockroach search!! hahahahahaha!!

It's Saturday night, I'm getting ready to out, and it's really cold outside. So I'm procrastinating by writing in here.
Unfortunately I only got one comment on my little literary bit that I posted yesterday. So here it is again, maybe I'll get some more feedback. If you read it, spare no mercy, please.
Anyway, today has been one of those good, semi-lazy Saturdays. I...

i'm surprised you are attempting an evolutionary argument for the attractiveness of secondary sex characteristics such as breasts, considering almost all of your fav sgs are small breasted.
interesting.

i'm guessing your attraction to olivia isn't mostly based on her breasts though (considering your other choices).
Hmm... where to begin?
In recent news... last night I went to see my friend's play at Julliard - they did a remake of Aristothanes' The Birds. It was pretty funny. Then we ended up going out late and drinking with the cast, which was also fun. Missed a call from V. to meet her downtown at a club, unfortunately. Next time.

I LOVED that piece. It was dead-on to what I'd have written about the Chicago subway system... same rules and everything. I identified completely.
The only part that was different was the "24-hour service". Chicago's subways, for some reason, don't run 24/7.
The parts about knowing when a train left by how many people are on the platform and spotting the open seats as the train slows down made me laugh - so TRUE!

Thank you for the kind words.

Laundry... the bane of our modern existence. Now I understand why people in colonia times had like 3 outfits total (you know, the black one with the buckle hat, the ruffly collared shirt, etc.) I really can't imagine having to do my laundry by hand. It's too miserable for words.
My building has one washer and one dryer (conveniently located right outside my door.) However,...

when I was living in France, we didn't have a washer or dryer at our disposal...so...here's what us innovative musicians came up with:
Chorale's "Key" to Laundry - 1996
You will need:
-a bathtub with water (warm)
-dirty clothes
-laundry soap
-fabric softener (helps)
-places to hang laundry to dry
-feet and legs (preferably clean)
optional: a space heater
Plug up the bathtub. Begin filling it with water. Pour in detergent, softener, etc., then add clothes. Take off your socks, roll up your pant legs, hop in the tub and agitate.
Rinse.
Wring out. (You may need a buddy).
Hang.
The space heater comes in handy if you want to warm up the air to speed the drying process. We had a drying rack and a space heater, so it helped alot.
Good luck.
(are you serious? he FEDEXED his LAUNDRY? wtf?)
...edited to add: Your ass better be at the SG holiday bash.

when i was 14, i ate a 12 pack of original tacos from taco bell in one sitting. it was quite an experience; a delicious one at that. i've since stopped eating fast food, after an experience a few years back with some fries from burger king that tasted like milk. i can still feel them in my mouth.
minty:
I try not to eat there, but normal rules are usually suspended when I'm out in the field. I'm a vegetarian and it drives my dig-mates up the wall for no real reason. I was the only girl on my last excavation and I was constantly being pestered to eat more protein, etc.
Oh, about the culture/neurons thing, as I'm sure you know, language is only one part of the brain that seems to be shaped by differing experience. Me and a person in Papua New Guinea could be beaten every day of our lives and though our lingual centers would be different, we could have more similar brain structures to each other than to our respective neighbors. I figure that it's a lot like "race" in that it's a series of spectra that are unrelated.
zzzz, I can tell I'm babbling again. Where did you go to school before Columbia? I'll have to come up with a topic for you later, I haven't read the newest Science yet.
Your post on GMOs was good, btw. I hope I didn't trivialize it with my deep desire to own my very own Lucy.

Well, once again, here I am procrastinating on my grant application. I don't know why I can't force myself to just finish the damned thing (it's like 99% done) but whatever.

Holy thought-provoking post, Batman!
The snow...well...it took Michael and me 4 hours to get from my job in NJ to a restaurant in Queens for a birthday party we had to go to.
The cool part was that afterwards, we went to see "Bad Santa" in a rather uncrowded theatre.
I still want to move to California.
Edited to add: You're in!

Another good day. Two in a row, so I'm on a roll.
I woke up this morning rather early for a Saturday, since my parents were coming into town and we had arranged a meeting with my real estate broker. I'm thinking of taking the big plunge and buying an apartment in manhattan, and they know a lot about real estate, so I wanted them...

how awesome is that?
i love visiting the 'rents in nuevo york and having them treat me to everything, and that's what i love about new york. i can barely afford columbus, so lord knows i ain't moving there. but i do love the hustle, bustle, and class of that city.
but when i come back to columbus, and i can be the only one walking down the main street near my house, and the downtown area of my neighborhood, and i can get my cup of coffee from people who ask me about my life, and i can see a movie down the street for $7, why would i ever want to leave?
(and it hasn't snowed here yet, either. ha!)
(now, of course that i said that, it's going to snow eight feet by tomorrow, and they'll require my presence at work)

alrighty hon, i just vouched for you in SGNY

There will be some other screenings coming up as well. Rest assured, I will be doing plenty of shameless self promotion as the dates approach
And if you're interested in deep space stuff, you should look at the new generation of DS telescopes they are considering. I remember reading about an idea for three telescopes all floating out in space thousands of miles apart, and triangulating to form, essentially one HUGE telescope, thousands of miles across. I am not sure if this is a reality, but NASA does have a cool site for tracking what they call the DS projects.
We catholics (former in my case) just recently decided that the earth does indeed go around the sun, give us a break.
Hurry up and get internet access already.
