And if you're interested in deep space stuff, you should look at the new generation of DS telescopes they are considering. I remember reading about an idea for three telescopes all floating out in space thousands of miles apart, and triangulating to form, essentially one HUGE telescope, thousands of miles across. I am not sure if this is a reality, but NASA does have a cool site for tracking what they call the DS projects.

I'm going Up North (always capitalized in Michigan) to visit my family. They do not have an internet connection, so I will be without IMs, email, and SG for about six days. I plan to do a lot of reading. Lots and lots of reading.

I'm not sure about New Year's Eve. I was supposed to spend it with my (now ex) boyfriend and our friends, but I'm not sure now... I'd still like to, but it might be Weird, and I don't want to make anyone's holiday Weird. So I'm not really sure. My mother said I could stay an extra week and celebrate with them, but as much as I love them... NO. I need the city. I need the noise. I need the internet. I need buildings taller than one story.

i thought it was beautiful as well, although a bit choppy in parts (but that will all get filled in with the extended version)

I grew up near a nature preserve so vermin of all shapes and sizes isn't foreign. but now that I live in Brooklyn I see nary a one. roach, mouse, rat, nothing. the closest we get are the two little piece of crap gay dogs my future sister in law has. ugh. little ankle biters.

I LOVED that piece. It was dead-on to what I'd have written about the Chicago subway system... same rules and everything. I identified completely.

The only part that was different was the "24-hour service". Chicago's subways, for some reason, don't run 24/7.

The parts about knowing when a train left by how many people are on the platform and spotting the open seats as the train slows down made me laugh - so TRUE!

when I was living in France, we didn't have a washer or dryer at our disposal...so...here's what us innovative musicians came up with:

Chorale's "Key" to Laundry - 1996
You will need:
-a bathtub with water (warm)
-dirty clothes
-laundry soap
-fabric softener (helps)
-places to hang laundry to dry
-feet and legs (preferably clean)
optional: a space heater

Plug up the bathtub. Begin filling it with water. Pour in detergent, softener, etc., then add clothes. Take off your socks, roll up your pant legs, hop in the tub and agitate.

Rinse.

Wring out. (You may need a buddy).

Hang.

The space heater comes in handy if you want to warm up the air to speed the drying process. We had a drying rack and a space heater, so it helped alot.

The things you can learn from single men...

when i was 14, i ate a 12 pack of original tacos from taco bell in one sitting. it was quite an experience; a delicious one at that. i've since stopped eating fast food, after an experience a few years back with some fries from burger king that tasted like milk. i can still feel them in my mouth.

I try not to eat there, but normal rules are usually suspended when I'm out in the field. I'm a vegetarian and it drives my dig-mates up the wall for no real reason. I was the only girl on my last excavation and I was constantly being pestered to eat more protein, etc.

Oh, about the culture/neurons thing, as I'm sure you know, language is only one part of the brain that seems to be shaped by differing experience. Me and a person in Papua New Guinea could be beaten every day of our lives and though our lingual centers would be different, we could have more similar brain structures to each other than to our respective neighbors. I figure that it's a lot like "race" in that it's a series of spectra that are unrelated.

zzzz, I can tell I'm babbling again. Where did you go to school before Columbia? I'll have to come up with a topic for you later, I haven't read the newest Science yet.

The snow...well...it took Michael and me 4 hours to get from my job in NJ to a restaurant in Queens for a birthday party we had to go to.
The cool part was that afterwards, we went to see "Bad Santa" in a rather uncrowded theatre.
I still want to move to California.

how awesome is that?
i love visiting the 'rents in nuevo york and having them treat me to everything, and that's what i love about new york. i can barely afford columbus, so lord knows i ain't moving there. but i do love the hustle, bustle, and class of that city.
but when i come back to columbus, and i can be the only one walking down the main street near my house, and the downtown area of my neighborhood, and i can get my cup of coffee from people who ask me about my life, and i can see a movie down the street for $7, why would i ever want to leave?
(and it hasn't snowed here yet, either. ha!)
(now, of course that i said that, it's going to snow eight feet by tomorrow, and they'll require my presence at work)
