From the pages of The New Yorker (current issue, Jan. 14), a notable poem by the great Terrance Hayes:

American Sonnet For The New Year

things got terribly ugly incredibly quickly

things got ugly embarrassingly quickly

actually things got ugly unbelievably quickly

honestly things got ugly seemingly infrequently

initially things got ugly ironically usually

awfully carefully things got ugly unsuccessfully

occasionally things got ugly mostly...

Just glanced at it before I turned on the Tablet. An accurate summation.

Don't get me started on pet peeves - I get annoyed at so much stuff that I sometimes fear I'm turning into a crotchety old get-off-my-lawn type. Not likely, because I bottle up my peeve rage inside, where it belongs and doesn't litter the streets.

And, speaking of litter (see what I did there?), THAT happens to be a pet peeve of mine...

The glass bottles probably are a Berlin specialty because our beer drinkers are not as discerning. Hence the cans by the roadside. I found the litter collection to be less aggravating when I did it with a friend, then it became fun.

Several years back when my daughter and I had our last adventure. She got a desk sign: I Don't Have Pet Peeves, There's Whole Kennels Of Irritations. *** Picking up the trash people throw out of their car onto my front yard, yeah I hear you.

This Winter has been especially grey and dreary so far in my neck of the woods. I take Vitamin D, and am grateful for the occasional ray of sunshine, as provided by glamorous and amazing Hopeful @raisie in her current set, aptly titled SUNNY DAYS

raisie:
Thank you very much for your support!!!!! I send you a lot of hugs.

This picture will cheerup a gray day.

Seeing my main girl (I wish) @adriella on the Front Page is a happy way to almost ring out the old year! I'm lucky enough to have two more days off before heading back to the old grindstone for a shortened work week. Fireworks have been on sale here since Friday, and while it's theoretically forbidden to use them before New Year's...

@kaicito I grew  up on Pogo (I'm 70); there was one book he created called the "Jack Acid Society" which lampooned Nixon viciously -- so I'm pretty sure he would have sliced up Trump as well.  Pogo was one of the first openly political (and liberal) cartoons... the first, oddly enough, was "Little Orphan Annie" where she was to represent the "Orphaned" American Communist Party taking down Daddy Warbucks... but the franchise was sold, and she (and what she represented) was bought out by the aforementioned War-Bucks...

@oldernow I'm aware that characters like Joe McCarthy, J. Edgar Hoover and Spiro Agnew or caricatures thereof appeared in the strip. I do like Kelly's drawing style a lot (I believe he worked at the Disney studios for a while)

As the days keep on tumbling by, and the wall calendar is getting rapidly thinner, I would like to get an early start wishing y'all a restful and joyful time (whether or not you celebrate any of the seasonal holidays) as we close out the old year and ring in the new one in just a few all-too-short days - which in my case will...

My day, weekend, week, and month are made... @adriella has her new and second set in MR, and it's just about the hottest thing ever...

She makes a grown man cry. 😉😉

If the answer is "very", the question must've been "How cute and adorable is @liaadrian ?"

My new job has me roaming the streets of Berlin something crazy... my step counting app tells me I walked some 85 kilometers last week, and yesterday I hit a daily record with some 28,000 steps amounting to about 20 km. Not only do I get to see the city, but I get fit and drop weight, too, so it's a win-win. I...

Parabéns, as they say in Brazil, to the strikingly gorgeous @adriella on her birthday! We will be lucky to see her second set in a few days, or maybe weeks.

adriella:
Heeeyyy thank you so much for your affection and for always following my work <3
ferkixlll:
Thank you for flagging her Set for another look.

Seriously, isn't @hannacentauri perfect? I'm starting a movement to turn her pink, and I'm ready to march in the streets, do a sit-in and/or go on a hunger strike, if that's what it takes. Take a look at her new and 2nd set, then at her 1st set, and I dare you to disagree with me. Now excuse me, I...

Bear with me for a political rant, if you will. As you know, I'm in/from Germany, so it may seem weird for me to comment so extensively on U.S. politics, but a) I've been closely following that scene for longer than most SG members have been alive, and b) the same things are basically true in Germany.

The old saying "sticks...

Great words. Here in Brazil is the same situation, we're living with fear because our next president is racist, homophobic, misogynistic and has a hate speech. All I want to do is to leave my country.
deesilvs:
There's no doubt the US president's rhetoric has emboldened a far-right wave throughout the world. In Australia for example, we have the 'One Nation' party, who campaign on anti-immigrant, anti-islam, pro-white (they forwarded a bill to parliament called 'it's OK to be white', not joking), and "anti-political correctness", whatever that means. Then I think about the rest of the world (Matteo Salvini, Chenitz riots, Pittsburgh shootings, Brazil's new leader etc.) and it's all somewhat depressing. The discourse you alluded to on the internet's big social media sites are definitely responsible - freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences or responsibility!!

3 months from now, seeing the Queen herself right here in Berlin...
