The job is like a big puzzle, quite literally. At this point, that's about all I can say... I enjoy it, and it interests me, but I'm not sure about a great many things. We'll see.
Everything else is fundamentally ok. I'm kind of blah at the moment, but really, I have nothing to complain about.
So, I want all of you to do something for me, so I can (eventually) do something for you.
You may or may not know the game monopoly, but in the game, each player chooses a token for a playing piece... a terrier dog, a thimble, a top hat, a race car, and so on...

Odds are that I won't be around nearly as much as I have been, for a while at least. I'm not going anywhere, but I'm expecting that my days of waking up at 2 AM and not going back to sleep, but playing around in Silliness instead are over. I'm still hoping to have *some*... Read More
I made it. I'm a bit stiff, and rather exhausted but in good order. No blisters.
I was out at 9 AM sharp (a bit later than planned) and back at 2:24 PM, covering a bit over 16.5 miles in that time frame, which means I averaged slightly over 3 mph- which was my target speed for this time.
I would not consider L.A. to be Southwestern either. Noir is my first love in cinema. Neo-Noir is ok, but sometimes really pays off. L.A. Confidential is one example of awesome Neo-Noir. In my opinion.
I really like that movie. The book is really pretty good too. You are right that not much happens, but hey, a little southern scenery chewing is ok once in awhile. I love Georgia so movies taking place there always fascinate me.
The weather looks good tomorrow. Mostly cloudy, high of 78, 30% chance of rain, breezy.
This time, I'm going to do the whole 16 miles. Not 13, not 13.5. 16. There will be pictures from the bridge.
So, tomorrow from a little after 8 AM , to a bit after 1 PM (eastern) I'll be out walking.
I wound up having to reformat the drive, and reinstall windows and a whole bunch of software on my boss's (home) computer yesterday (worm+bunches of malware)... and wound up missing an unexpected going-away party.
So, I'm going back in to work today. Well I say "work", but it's a guest appearance at this point.
This means I won't be able to do the whole bridge... Read More
The new one is better. It's doing what I want to do, and it will keep me from becoming a dinosaur. I just have to kick butt. One of the things (as well as lots of walking) I'll be doing in my time between jobs is studying what I need to know. After all I... Read More
For the last few years, I've been anticipating pressure from new hires and coworkers polishing their skills, so that a lot of what I do could be done by just about anyone. And it never happens. It amazes me how limited the Excel skills are for our average office employees. Many don't know the basics, like how to hide or widen columns or set print areas. Most struggle with formulas or don't know how to use them at all. And the sad things is that most would indicate that they have average abilities if asked on a survey. Their perception of their skill is based on the fact that they've opened spreadsheets before without problems. Hence, they must know how to use Excel. Seriously, it's rather sad, as well as annoying. Most don't know anything at all about Access, so I'm safe there. That is, as long as senior management doesn't give us the tools to manage information for our needs - we'll have to keep building them ourselves.
My next attempt for the 16-mile trek to the river and back will be Thursday. I need some recovery time, even the around 13 miles I managed pretty much kicked my ass. I'll do a short walk this evening, but that's going to be it.
I want to try to make the trip almost every day between leaving my old job and starting the new... Read More
I think I shall do a sixteen mile hike today, to the river and back. There was a time, for a little while, where I could do that every day, and I did. But that was well over ten years ago.
I will have two weeks to do that kind of thing; my last day at the old job is the 10th, I start the... Read More
One of my friends at work is doing a three day, 60 mile walk with her daughter and a friend one of the next two weekends. It's a Susan G Komen thing that is being done in several cities at the same time, I believe. She jogs a lot and her daughter is athletic, so I think they'll be fine.
I'll keep that movie in mind. Always been a Lovecraft fan.
