How to stay safe as a model

When it comes to the modelling industry, especially nude modelling, it is important to make sure you’re safe when working with others. I’ve heard so many stories of new models getting into unwanted situations because they just didn’t see the red flags.

I myself have taken risks, my first ever set for Suicidegirls was a month after I turned 18, I found the photographer on model mayhem and he picked me up from the station to take me to his friend’s studio. The studio was specifically for porn, a lot higher levels than what I was shooting. I was lucky that this was a very decent guy and professional photographer. He asked if I wanted to do other shoots on the day and dropped it as soon as I said no. He showed me respect. Not everyone is like that. Here’s some tips to make sure you don’t get stuck with someone trying to take advantage;

1. Check their portfolio. If they don’t have one, or don’t have an online presence in this day and age then don’t shoot with them. If they’re just starting out then ask if they’ve shot anything with their friends etc, use your common sense judgement.

2. Ask other models they’ve worked with for references. No model is going to be put out by this! Ask multiple models not just 1 or 2.

3. If when they’re communicating with you it seems flirty, unprofessional or actually asking for something, don’t shoot with them! Someone saying you look good in a shot is very different to someone flirting with you. This is meant to be a professional relationship, keep it that way.

4. Ask if you can bring a chaperone. Even if you don’t intend to actually bring someone, a photographers reaction will say more about them. Often photographers don’t like partners being there cause it can distract the model or make you more uncomfortable depending on your relationship. Have a trusted friend.

5. If on the shoot something makes you uncomfortable. Say it. If your polite and it’s a genuine misunderstanding then no one is going to be upset about it.

6. If something happens or your uncomfortable after saying something then end the shoot. No images or money is worth putting yourself through that.

7. Review people you work with. Positive or negative this helps other models know who to trust.

Have fun on your shoots, get great images, and be safe doing it! 💜
