One of the problems with me watching DVDs is-- I have to listen to every drop of commentary... which means I've been watching all these rentals twice in a row, at least.
Yesterday, I got Pink Flamingos and Female Trouble as a 2-for-1, and of course I had to hear every word Waters said.... at first I was having moral qualms about the Crackers/Cookie scene, but as Waters explained (both in the at-end 25th anniversary edition comments, and the regular DVD commentary) they did end up eating the chicken, after all, so it's really not so bad.
I watched Female Trouble this morning; what a great movie. In his commentary, Waters explained a bit about drag queens-- when he started, in the '60s, drag queens were all square. They wanted to literally be Miss America or Judy Garland, he said, and it was through his movies (and probably the Warholian influence, too) that drag queens finally started becoming hip, trashy, nasty, and fun. He said that he deliberately steered away from them after Divine's death, out of tribute to him/her, but that he did recently see a very entertaining drag queen in New Orleans. He felt the dq's comic energy and timing were great, so he said, "You're very quick," to which the dq responded, "I ought to be; I'm on crack!"
