Apparently, the best-selling rum brand in the world is, unsurprisingly, Bacardi. Perhaps more surprising is that number two is Tanduay, as in Europe and America it's virtually unheard of. In its home country of the Philippines it's hugely popular (and extremely cheap) but while lots is exported to the rest of Asia, it hasn't ever made its way to Europe.

Way back in 2002 I...

This time it's a 4-way comparison between Beefeater, Tanqueray, Sipsmith and Aldi's own-brand 'Oliver Cromwell' Dry London Gin.

Method

Round 1: Made 4 G&Ts using 25ml of gin, 75ml of tonic, ½ a slice of lime (partially squeezed) and approximately equal amounts of ice. Labelled each cup. Then got a third party to re-label each cup and erase original label, noting correspondence. Comparative taste-test (invited...

Note: Aldi's own-brand gin, despite being only £10 for a 70cl bottle, has won multiple international awards. Although I wasn't particularly blown away by it, it's certainly respectable and easily on a par with the gins in the next price-bracket up.

Winged ants flying all over the place this afternoon.

Damn it, even the ants are getting more action than I am. 😆

Method

Made two G&Ts. Both in identical glasses, with half a slice of lemon & lime in each, same amount of ice, each with the same volume of gin (50ml, Beefeater). But made one using Fever Tree tonic and the other with Waitrose own-brand tonic (both straight from fridge).

a) Compared both drinks myself.
b) Invited housemates to compare drinks and try and identify which...

I live on a fairly unremarkable residential street in a lively, partially-gentrified inner-city neighbourhood. Five doors down from my house is a small tattoo studio. It's just a one-person operation with everything done by appointment; no walk-ins and no real shop-front (the building has space for one, but it's just an empty room). I've checked out the artist online and wasn't particularly impressed. I'm not...

So, two weeks ago, faced with a fledging bald patch after two decades with long hair, I took a set of clippers to my scalp and gave myself a no. 3 all over. What have I learned since?

1. This feels really strange. I'm not weirded out by the way the wind feels across my head any more, but I still get loads of 'ghost...

I would submit that the constant tedious obsession with my hair is also a turn-off, except that mostly I keep that to myself. I only keep rambling about it here because I don't really have anywhere else to share this crap. It helps to put it into words but I'd rather not share this with the people I know in person.

I've been having a really good week. Work has been fairly easy with no major hassles. We've had the first bit of really good weather this year, which makes everything nicer.

Monday wasn't anything special, although having reasonably nice weather to cycle to and from Pilates was a nice change.

Dancing on Tuesday as usual. I've been a bit nervous about teaching the Shag class...
