Douglas Adams said that he didn't start writing until he was in his 30's becasue he needed to have enough life experience to write about and the perspective in which to ground himself. Then after he'd written his books he had to quit and live life again. He'd started writing again as he was nearing 60 but sadly died before he could write any more.

Given the option I'd rather do that than churn out shit every 16 months like a number of "popular" authors these days.
