True Story.
Picture it. Chicago. 2001.
I'm deathly ill with bronchitis, but I really want to see an old friend who has come into town. So, we agree to meet at the Hard Rock Cafe for dinner.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Enter our heroine, Sorcha, wearing an old college sweatshirt and jeans. She is sniffling, hacking, wheezing, and rubbing her nose with Kleenex every minute. She can hardly talk, as her throat is scratched from coughing.
Sorcha sits at a bench and waits.
Enter our supporting actor, Bill, wearing jeans, a Cure t-shirt, and a black leather jacket. He is feeling healthy and energetic.
They sit.
The cutest waiter ever pops over and asks, "How are you two doing?"
Sorcha says, "Just peachy. I'm enjoying the Cold from the Depths of Hell, so may I please have a strawberry milkshake to soothe my throat?"
Bill orders a Coke.
TCWE comes back to the table and says, "Here you go, cutie," as he sets the milkshake in front of our hero.
Bill chuckles, earning a half-second glare from Sorcha that shuts him up before she turns to TCWE and playfully inquires, "Cute? You're joking, right? I look like W.C. Fields."
He winks and says, "You look lovely to me."
He was either a) insane or b) wanted a huge tip. Sorcha knew this.
Sorcha says, "If you're worried about a tip, relax and be honest. I always tip 25% unless you forget refills. So just be yourself."
He replies, "Okay," and kisses the top of our hero's head before going back to the kitchen.
Bill starts cackling as Sorcha tells him to shut up. She is blushing furiously.
The dinner goes smoothly, with more flirting from TCWE. Sorcha is reduced to a pile of girly-crush while Bill looks on, amused to all hell.
Our hero informs Bill that she is going to write her number on the receipt. Bill says, "That's dumb."
Sorcha replies, "Maybe, but it could work."
Ten minutes pass. TCWE comes over with the check and says, "I've had the weirdest night. These two vapid blondes flirted with me all night, even though I told them I wasn't interested."
Sorcha says, "Well, that sucks."
TCWE looks at her and says, "I know. And here I am flirting with you, and I mean it. But these two chicks were so dumb and slutty, not cool like you. They even wrote their phone number on the check."
Bill starts dying of laughter while Sorcha kicks him under the table, smiling at TCWE the entire time.
Bill won't stop laughing. Sorcha continues to glare at him.
TCWE leaves the check, and our hero writes her number on it. Bill asks, "What are you doing?!? Didn't you hear him?"
Sorcha replies, "Of course I did. That doesn't mean I care. I do what I want and don't care what people think. It's not like I'll ever see him again."
Exit our hero and her friend.
Epilogue: He did not call, but our hero spotted him with his arm around a girl at the subway station two weeks later. She did the heroic thing.
She hid.
I wanted to drop you a line and tell you i put my "morning light" pic back in the header file. I had removed it before, not because of embarassment, but because i was all mad that the group was acting so badly when you popped down to the store for some milk. Anyhow, after re-reading your rules (how you won't delete pics), i decided i didn't feel like that anymore, so i put it back in. Besides--you wrote me the nicest thread because of that pic and i luv ya for it. Hope you'll be seeing more soon. It's always a time issue with me.
