Well, please accept my belated congrats on the reception. M and I are actually planning to basically do what y'all did, but on purpose. We can't be bothered with getting an officiant to do something in front of folks (we're already dreading the conversation with the kids, "see, your daddy thinks there definitely *isn't* a G-d, and your mommy just isn't sure. Your teacher is a damn liar, and will get eaten by tiny worms when he dies."). So we're going to go to the courthouse the day before, and then skip straight to the cake and booze when our friends and family arrive.

Couldn't doing labor while thinking about your dissertation count as investigating the connection between physical labor and American political thought in a democracy>

It's pretty damn fascinating/scary arena, if you ask me. I've been going against my beliefs these days by not supporting Nader. I get approached weekly by his army asking me to help support him. Even though I believe he should run, I can't support him this time. I don't consider myself a Democrat, but if Kerry can feasably do it, he gets my vote. It's just a shame that this country is divided amongst political parties. G.Washington said political parties would destroy America. I can't help but slightly agree.

I almost got married once.... for school purposes. It woulda been a marriage of convienience though to a good friend. We decided against it.

YOu make this movie sound almost appealing. My fear is that the reality of it won't live up to the interesting ideas that you've raised as a result.

I'm a big fan of the notion of reversing traditional gender roles through art, because it challenges them. I think the whole concept of dominance as masculine and submission as feminine is imprisoning to both genders - both to those who would impose those roles on others and to those who ruly on those rules for establishing their own identities.

Sir, I must say you are one of the smartest peers I have ever spoken to. Im speechless and trying to figure out if "spoken" is the correct word to use. I really respect someone of your intelligence level. I would've just went to see that movie and walked out of the theatre saying "that sucked. what a stupid movie".

I agree with you, it's a refreshing change in tone. Tyrannies are highly efficient, but efficiency isn't the end-all/be-all of human existence, like some would have it be. Sometimes a little debate and deliberation is what's needed to come to the right solution (even if it isn't the fastest route.)

That, and the only thing the process definitely accomplishes is bad feelings between neighbors. You've hit on a topic a bit too close to my prfessional life.

I don't think I have a lot to offer that hasn't already been said. One way to think of/about globalisation (sorry, but I'll be spelling it with an "s", heh) is as a set of drivers of, and responses to, change. I think that's a useful way to try and conceptualise what's going on.

Change in aggregate of course, pretty much by definition, involves gainers and losers. Most bad discussions of globalisation are, IMO, bad because they misrepresent who the gainers and losers are, and mis-estimate the magnitude of the gains and losses. I'm in the liberal globalisation camp that tends to see the benefits of what we think of as globalisation -- the opening of trade and finance and the movement of productive resources around the globe -- as being greater than the costs. But particular people in both rich countries and poor countries do stand to lose, in ways already noted above.

I think the fact of the change is (more or less) inevitable. I think how we cope with the change is the challenge. That's kind of glib, I know, but the alternative is a 5 page essay I don't want to write and you guys probably don't want to read.

I generally find borders to be morally repugnant. As such, it troubles me not to see American jobs shipped to the other side of the world. Even though I know these workers are initially much less-well protected in their jobs and much less-well compensated, I still generally support the exportation of economic stability from American soil abroad. Im quite convinced that even if the United States can maintain a significant inequality, eventually the economic hardship felt by those being aggressively relocated to our service economy will one day trickle up. A nation that does not produce anything has little leverage and its currency stability depends entirely on the noble lies of intellectual property and ownership. One day, When America remains a singular consumer whose consumables are flowing from around the world without a single great export beyond our lackluster culture, the rest of the world will wake up and well be very poor indeed.

I'm so jealous that you got to go to the sg show and meet all those fun people! Grrrrrr! Well glad you had an awesome time... it sounds like everyone who went had a really kickass time.
