Usually I'm really good at just drinking steadily and keeping a nice buzz, but there are some nights when you just really want to get wasted, and when you really want to ge wasted, not much is going to stop you.

I must go to the dentist this afternoon. Just the standard cleaning and check-up. Usually this isn't a problem; I take excellent care of my teeth and all - it's a bit of an obsession. It's funny, because humans seem to be hardwired to regard the past as somehow more authentic than the corrupted present--radical reformers from Confucius, Lycurgus, and Cato to Rousseau, Mao, and Gingrich have usually phrased their proposals in terms of restoring a bygone order, rather than raising a new one.
Liberals themselves are not immune to such temptation, however. We venerate the Founding Fathers just as much as conservatives, with a fetishistic idolization that borders on ancestor-worship. We simply disagree about specifically what they stood for.
I think it's good and right to question, though, if what they stood for is always really relevant today.
In this case, of course, the case of justifiable treason, the answer is obvious. It is America's most significant, and most noble, contribution to history, our true gift to the world (much more so than "freedom," which apparently can mean very different things in the minds of people like Frederick Douglass, on the one hand, and Jeff Davis, on the other). Actually, now that I think about it, the Chinese invented it. But that's not important.

It's not silly to stay for your cat. Personally, I wouldn't go anywhere I couldn't take my cat with me. I promised a long time ago, when she was a baby, and I was an incredibly depressed girl without any friends, that as long as we were together we would be okay, and that I would sacrifice anything for her. I guess it sounds a little extreme... especially since at that point, she wasn't even my cat yet. We've had a pretty intense 2 and a half years.

Back to the 50s
I've always wondered why people always write sci-fi/fantasy, together, just like that. The two genres really have very little in common. Maybe because they're both considered nerdy?
i guess specifically i do because i have worked at bookstores for over six years and seen which books are classified specifically as sci-fi and which as fantasy, and never gave a fig about any of them until i read Stephenson. and the thing about Stephenson, in my opinion, is that he fits well in both categories. as well as Historical Fiction, actually.
but i can see that J.R.R. Tolkein in specifically fantasy. i would imagine that i'll be mostly drawn to Fantasy more than Sci Fi, because the other stuff i have liked is young adult novels, lots of stuff in the Magical Realism genre, and stuff involving witches and magic.
