I haven't read the book or seen the movie. However I had that same reaction with Cider House Rules. I also couldn't bring myself to see Cold Mountain because I read a copy of the script and knew how badly it compared to the book.
Still I will say from experience it's really hard to make a film adaptation that's true to the book. I think the screenwriters ego plays a large part in that.
