My thanks for the help given thus far. While I would not mind buying used shoes, my feet are thirteen double-wide, so I have a hard enough time finding new shoes that fit at times. Also, I do realize leather pollutes. I never thought it to be a perfectly environmentally friendly solution, but it is both fortunately and unfortunately not as unreasonable an option as I would like.

No, no...I concur. Not too many veg alternatives for the bikers. I currently wear a Joe Rocket jacket. All synthetic, padded. But damn if I just don't trust that thing in a high-speed crash. Gloves (with armor) are impossible to find. Even my riding boots...sythetic outer with a leather (wtf?) inner liner. Weak.
It's tough when you see every track racer out there in full leathers. If synthetics are so much lighter (!) and just as safe, why aren't the big boys wearing them? Is this a proactive case of "if it's your life or the cow's, which would you pick?"
I'm not ready to cash in my chips just yet. And especially not because of some dumbfuck in a car.

i suppose they use some sort of chemical process in the industry, but tanning (curing) is traditionally done with a paste made of the animal's brain

And yes, most of the Leatherworking stuff past 300 is mail armor
And you will most likely get better items from Instance runs
But here are some semi- decent Leather Items that can be made that are leather
Fel Leather Gear
Kinda depends on what Gems you can get, but its something decent if you dont do Instances much

The craftable Fel-leather, Cobrascale pieces are all quite good for rogues. If you're not lacking hit rating, the Primal Strike craftables are also quite delicious. All that +AP is rox for a combat spec. The real gems are the application trade uses, though. Nethercobra/nethercleft kits are insanely awesome.
