I've never felt that life is to be taken too seriously - even in the harshest of moments & circumstances, if you can't laugh, or at least smile, you're screwed!
I will - quite often! - be the brunt of my own jokes... if you can't laugh at yourself, then who will ?
and, if possible, I'll be the first to laugh at myself - someone has to, right ? :D
I used to excel at this, to the point that - when I lived near friends - I'd actually get visitors because they knew I'd eventually make them laugh & smile from something I either said or did...
no, I didn't know they were 'using' me at the time, but - honestly! - does it matter ?
when you can bring a smile to another's face or warmth to their cheeks from laughter, then - by gods! - it's worth being 'used' :)
around the right people, it's easy to do - especially when moments can be shared ( such as memories of a lost loved one who you know would rather see you laughing & smiling )
there are always those rare few who you rarely see crack a smile, but if they ever spent enough time around me, eventually they would crack...
and I'd enjoy every brutal little moment of it *laughs*
and - trust me! - you can smile & laugh through pain as well as loss... I've laughed my ass off immediately after accidents I was in & even had doctors, etc shaking their heads with a smirk :)

hells, I've actually caused people to be in pain from laughing - to the point, usually, where they want to kill me for it :D
but, by gods, who am I to stop when I'm on a roll ?
...seriously, when you get that moment & you're 'on,' then roll with it - keep 'em laughing 'til they're guts hurt !!
those are moments they'll remember in the end - even if they don't remember why or what had them laughing, they'll remember the laughter !
and, yes, this does mean that I'll oft find what people think of as the 'wrong' things amusing or in the 'wrong' moments...
but - c'mon! - whose really in the wrong when it comes to laughter, to amusement, to finding & realizing how absurd life really is ?!?
Life is about Living! ...and if that means someone is offended, then by gods - offend away!
they're obviously not seeing the humour in it all & that's a shame, shame, shame...!
