So I am having a 4oth birthday surprise party for a good friend. Since he is always working and has ungodly hours, I was reduced to telling him about it, in order to make sure he would be there. So the surprise is actually on all the people who think it is still a surprise party. Someone is really going to be surprised.

Have him get there early and have everyone else show up 45 minutes late, after getting messages saying that they are blowing off the party.
