An eternal staple in the sci-fi/fantasy genre is the notion of the prison planet. A desolate star in a far off galaxy where our hero (or heroine) dispatches miscreants to live out his (or her) days in abject misery (or at least until the inevitable escape, which always seems to be JUST in time for the next adventure,) Funny how that works.
