I have a ticket to see the great and mighty Fantomas at the 40 Watt on April 2nd.
The Japanese group Melt Banana will be the openers.
This promises to be an extremely brutal show.
The weather is so nice and warm right now; you'd never guess that it snowed last week. Today is going to be a fantastic day.

Tendonitis is a bitch.
I have overexerted the tendon which binds one of my hip flexor muscles to the medial iliac region of my pelvis. Specifically, it's attached to the rectus femoris muscle, usually the strongest muscle in the body.
People will tell you that the tounge is the strongest muscle, which is true in relative terms. But in terms of absolute strength, the rectus...

This isn't for you. It's for me. Don't even bother reading any further.
Many years ago, when I was little more than a boy, I saw a beautiful girl.
I didn't know anything about her at the time, but the image of her face that night will remain with me always. Several weeks later, we met by chance. That night, I cast my spell on...

just sending you some hugs...
My first gig went really well. We played to a packed house, albeit a small one. I was pretty fucking nervous. At no point did we ever choke or make glaring mistakes, and there was even one song that we nailed utterly note for note.
Given that I've only been playing drums since Christmas, I guess I couldn't have asked for much more. There was...

hey, i have a question. what exactly is the heirophant? i ask because one fo the tattoos i'm thinking of getting invloves crossed keys, and i noticed that you said that was the symbol for the heirophant, and i didn't want to be "that guy" who has a tattoo but no idea what it means.
deckwreck:
awesome, thanks.
I just came up with the topic for my grant proposal project in Fungal Genetics.
Behold its magnificence.
The filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa exhibits a phenomenon known as RIP, or repeat-induced point mutation. This mean that the more copies there are of a certain nucleotide sequence within its genome, the more they tend to accumulate point mutations, or changes in the identity of a single...

You know, I could go off for awhile about what a great and glorious day it is today. But I will not do that. You want fluffy bunnies and happy sunshine, go somewhere else.
I shall share something awful with you instead.
Last year, in San Diego, I went to a museum exhibit of torture devices from the Inquisitions(there were actually 3, the famous Spanish...

I was sharing a story withdaniel13 and optimistress the other night about how I used to go to work with my mom at Grady Memorial Hospital(for those unaware, that's Atlanta's hospital for the indigent; no one with money goes there). She worked in the neonatal intensive care unit, so I got to see lots of crack babies. I was telling them how I saw...

I love that you quoted Principal Skinner - I actually have that same exact quotation printed out and taped to my desk in the lab.
Impressive sleuthing by the way, you were spot on in figuring out which lab I'm in. I'm guessing you're in the Paterson lab at UGA?
The Neuregulin/Schizophrenia connection right now is the hottest thing in molecular psychiatry. And we're trying to capitalize on it as much as possible. There have now been 5 independent familial genetics papers establishing linkage (with good LOD scores) between the two. The intracellular signaling stuff is coming from my other advisor's lab (two mentors) Dr. Talmage - he published a paper in J. Cell Biol last year showing how the cytoplasmic domain of Neuregulin seems to be involved in a novel signaling pathway involving the gamma-secretase complex. The Schwann cell stuff was done a few years ago, and was one of the ways that CRD-Nrg was discovered (one its original names was SMDF - Schwann cell Maturation and Differentiation Factor.)
Finished in May, huh? Lucky. I'm only in my 3rd year, I've probably got another 2 left until I'm done. Doing a postdoc?

LIKE THE SVRGEON - THE COMPOSER SLASHES OPEN THE BODY OF HIS FELLOW MAN - REMOVES HIS EYES - EMPTIES HIS ABDOMEN OF ORGANS - HANGS HIM VP ON A HOOK - HOLDING VP TO THE LIGHT ALL OF THE BODY'S PALPITATING TREASVRES - SENDING A BVRST OF LIGHT INTO ITS INNERMOST DEPTHS

Yeah, I know what you mean about not wanting to make definitive statements about evolution (or science in general.) I think that's one of the reasons why scientists are often perceived as being wishy-washy and not having any backbone, because so few things in science are definite that they usually don't want to take a strong stance on anything.
Your work sounds interesting - I didn't realize people were doing much expression profiling on plants. Are you interested in nitrogen fixation? And are you guys using Affymetrix arrays, or spotted arrays? That technology is pretty cool, it seems like people are often coming up with creative applications of it.
My work is basically a whole animal approach to molecular biology - my lab has a mouse knockout of a gene called CRD-Neuregulin. My project is to figure out what are the effects of knocking out that gene at a particular synapse in the brain (the inferior olive to deep cerebellar nuclear synapse) where it's normally expressed, at a molecular level, an electrophysiological level and a whole-animal behavior level. So I get to do lots of different kinds of experiments, it's pretty fun. Are you in school?

I fought the law, and I won.
I sat in the courtroom and watched a string of defendants either lose their cases or plead guilty. But I won. Not only am I glad for myself, but also for the fact that my case may have set a precedent which may help others in the future. Or perhaps it will turn police into better liars.

Yay for you!! It sounds like things have been challenging the last couple of weeks. Hopefully, things will now turn around and give you some uplift mofo grooves.
Thanks for more insight on my favorite buggy bug. The things you know amaze me!
Jesus songs scare me. Especially when I wake up first thing in the morning, and one of the ones from way, way, way back when stari was a wee little sunday school girl is on a constant loop in my head. Eeeeeek!!
