"There's cracks in this armrest," Rameshacklee said, rubbing his elbow across the now blemished vinyl of the armrest.
"Should have gotten it in leather," Delancie said, still looking out the window. Rameshacklee poked at the two cracks for a few moments then groaned.
"Shit," he said, "it's enough to make you want to swear off chairs." At this he expected a witty reply from his associate, but none came. Rameshacklee, the boyman, got up and joined his friend at the window. "Hey, you okay?"
"Just watching the city," Delancie said. Rameshacklee kneeled at the window and rested his elbows on the sill. Outside the city was glowing in the early hours of the night. The light reflected off the smog ceiling and came back down to make everything visible, everything clear and restless.
"I hate this place," Delancie said, then kneeled down next to Rameshacklee.
"You always say that, but you never leave."
"I know. But...eventually. Sometimes fate just demands your attendance," Delancie sighed and shook his head. "That doesn't make any sense, does it?"
"No, not really," Rameshacklee replied. "Just be quiet and relax. We don't have to be anywhere right now. This moment is ours." Delancie nodded at this and moved to sit down flat on his butt with his knees pulled up.
Outside, the noise of cars in the streets mixed with the varied sounds of people in transition. It almost sounded like white noise turned down low, possibly relaxing. Rameshacklee shrugged, a moment of peace was so hard to come by these days.
