I just finished reading RED STORM RISING an old Tom Clancy and toward the end of the book, they mention my dad's old boat the SSN Groton. I thought that that was awesome because as a kid I was at it's launching and the family ate dinner on the boat a couple of times. The point in the book where it is mentioned was not the best point of the story they sent a group of subs into Russian waters and some didn't make it back but I was glad to read that Tom didn't decide to kill my dads old boat.

After I finished the book, I looked up what happened to the Groton it amazes me as to how short a career that boat actually had. My dad was very proud of that boat it was his last one and he was on the gold crew from the beginning. I think it would have broken his heart to see it stricken from the record after 19 years.

Most of the time my dad was in the Navy he served on missile boats so most of what he had seen and done he could not tell us but some of the things he did on the Groton. It was great to listen to him and my neighbor talk about their Navy careers (my neighbor served on a carrier). I took a lot of pride in the fact that my dad's boat during an exercise targeted the neighbors ship for almost a whole day and if the wanted to they could have sunk her the old my dad can kick your dads ass.

That book really made me miss him
