Mary Wollstonecraft is a bad ass, dead or not. two hundred and 20 (+) yrs after writing Vidication of the Rights of Women, I'm STILL thinking stuff that she was railing against prior to the Ratification of the U.S. Constitution. Kind of blows me away. I know that i'm a reflection, to some degree, of the society I'm from/in, and that makes it all the...

went to a hockey game tonight... got bored, as the home team really friggin' sucked, and the other team, while better, wasn't much to behold either. Came home, started in on the Chesmaster 8000 CD-ROM and Vodka, and voila! Here I am a few hours later.
I'm really digging on chess these days. Mainly because I suck at it. As with anything else, If I...

For some reason i just can't DO chess. I know I'm an intellegent person and all, but with chess I just can never understand it, no matter how hard I think.
Maybe it takes some math skills, which I have none of.

Chess is a mystery to me. I never really gave it a real big try but I don't think it is up my alley.
Unpopular sentiments, I know, but I'm a firm believer in this for the most part:
College isn't a place to learn what you want. That's what libraries and parks are for. Colleges are a place to engage people to think about things they probably wouldn't otherwise, and to ultimately, create a class of educated individuals that will in some way benefit society. I attend a traditional college, sometimes too traditional for my liking but... Of the 60 upper level courses I need for my degree, there are only 3 which are Absolutely required. The rest are choices made from a block of potentials and electives from within the field of study... I agree with the Liberal Arts College method for truly specialized or emerging fields (ethnobotany, true-cost or Green Economics, etc...). But overall, I think that's kind of the strength of a college education... the fact that people interested in something engage with a program designed by others who have already studied the field. I agree that choice is good, but at the end of the day, if it's stuff I would have just read at my own pace and discretion anyway, then college was not hing more than an overpriced place to borrow books and get reading lists from I think... I think a lot of people don't approach their education as something that is cumulative, which is ok... it doesn't directly impact me... I just feel like they might get hooked up a little bit more if they did, and didn't focus so much on the instant gratification questions like "how is this supposed to help me get a job?" and the like.
Your school sounds cool though, and I think it's cool that you get the involvement that you do in designing it's structure. I just know that left to their own devices, most students I know would take fluff courses from the easiest instructors and do the minimal amount of preparation and studying for the maximum benefit it would yield. Which is the same motivation behind the gripes I hear from my classmates about "why do we have to know C. Wright Mills" or something... My answer is, "well, you don't..." You don't have to know a lot of things, but what's the big deal? If they weren't in class talking about it or at home reading it, most of them would just be watching Buffy anyway... it's an education and I think it should be broad as hell. Individuals tend to specialize well enough on their own.
Of course, I don't study education, so don't listen to me, I don't know what I'm talking about.

WHY YAKS HAVE THREE MOTHERFUCKIN TOES
I can't decide. Anyhow. I'm not so bad right now. I generally think things are... but people pretty much save me. I'm realizing that in a really hardcore way. For the most part I'm kind...

Last night I saw The Grapes of Wrath for the first time ever, in a class I'm taking, and it blew me away. I don't know how many of you have seen that movie, but it's set in the Depression/Dustbowl era and is about Tom Joad and his family trying to survive. (some successful, some not so...) But the parallels between the Joads and America...

Three minutes left until face-off on ESPN2. I have no idea who the teams playing tonight are, but it's Sunday night, its the end of my weekend and hockey is a good way to close the deal.
Thus ends my entry.

Dear Suicide Girls... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stop blocking the entry way to my house. I understand the motivations and generally encourage people to follow their dreams and aspirations but please... Two words: "HOCKEY MAKES THE WORLD GO 'ROUND!" It's Thursday night, the '03 season opened up last night and I've already seen four games. And while I normally don't believe in the hand of/presence of "God," I'm starting to find cracks in my atheist beliefs due to things like this.

I just started in Public Admin. I'm taking the required 1st "Public Admin" course and Admin. Theory & Behavior. I could only afford 2 classes right now- that's $1600! Boo.
I'm hopefully gonna be full time next term and take Admin Law and Policy Implementation, and Strategic Planning. Fun! (And I'm not being sarcastic, it does sound fun.)
And I love you too for loving Foucault. I was a poli sci in undergrad and I had 2 teachers that somehow forced me to like his writing and views. You have to read the other books on my list too! Especially Kundera since you're into politics.
It's really ironic that you wrote about hockey because less than 5 mins. ago I was thinking I need to get Winterhawks tickets! I used to be a hardcore figure skater so hockey rocks. But I think I'll wear a helmet to the game, ha ha, did you hear about that girl that died from a puck last year?
