i forgot to include this this morning, but i was listening to the revolting cocks' (henceforth abbreviated to revco) album "big sexy land" and i was wondering why that industrial album is so head and shoulders above everything else the genre has produced. furthermore, i was thinking about why einsturzende neubauten, feotus, KMFDM, ministry, pigface, and nine inch nails are untouchable by most of the shit that comes out these days and it's pretty obvious to me now. Not only were they all groundbreaking, they're not 'industrial' to the exclusion of all else and most of all they don't take themselves too seriously.
EN basically makes britpop (despite not being british) with clunky pipes these days, and they couldn't be better. pigface albums were so wildly experimental without sacrificing accesibility that they should be paraded around in place of radiohead, frankly and honestly. and they were FUNNY. when al jourgenson says "and all i could do was ding a ding dang my dang along ling long" in "jesus built my hot rod" it was fucking brilliant, and he wasn't so obsessed with being caustic and menacing that he actually said it. kmfdm are more self-referential than some hiphop acts, and always devote one track per album to reminding you how awesome they are (explicitly) or alternately how much they suck (for example, "sucks" off of "angst"). Foetus cranked out this incredible dissections of basically every musical genre. trent reznor is a musical genius pure and simple, if not so much a lyrical one.
moreover, none of these groups are afraid to shit on the industrial moniker, either. lesser groups are simply churning out more versions of specific sounds created by these bands, which in some cases is fine but is inevitably second class. but wumpscut no matter how good they sound are too carried away with being dark to create do a cover of "physical (you're so)", or "lay lady lay". VNV nation probably don't get it either, nor to assemblage 23 or icon of coil or combichrist.
which is a bit of a truth about the larger non-industrial world (no, not that non-industrial world). singular dimensionality is kind of boring, and way too many people hinge their personalities on a single peg these days it seems. I like to think that i'm at least passingly interesting because of my strange synthesis of twisted porn and cute pug dogs as some of my favorite (seperate!) things. but it'd just be wierd and tiresome if i was only into stileproject, or pug dogs, but not both. and probably equally as creepy both ways.
so yeah, depth. like different stuff.
I HATE ALL ART WRITING, ESPECIALLY MY OWN.
