First of all, if you're in town on Feb 7th you should go to the Empty Bottle and see Poster Children....they always put on a damn fine show. If I can somehow bullshit together enough money to go, I will be there, but it's doubtful.
Anyway, about God...the biggest problem I am having is figuring out why he would create anything, but us specifically. The only things I can think of are either "he wanted to" for some reason or "he had to" for some reason. Either way, I think you have to give up the belief that God is perfect and that is a stumbling block for me since I was always taught that God is perfect. I think my new found faith is due, in part, to me accepting that maybe God doesn't necessarily have to be perfect and the belief that he is stems from "My God can beat up your God" type of bragging. I've read a lot of Christian theology and philosophy and none of them seem willing to give up God's perfection. They even seem to go to great lengths to preserve it, sometimes even believing absolutely ridculous things just to keep it. The whole "Problem of evil" question baffled me for awhile, but ultimately I think it can be done away with simply by saying that just because we perceive of something as being evil doesn't mean that it really is. But, the fact that God has created anything, I think, is a much bigger hit against his perfection than anything because either he was lacking in some way and therefore wanted to create something or he had to create which would mean that his will is bound by something other than himself and he is no longer omnipotent.
What do you think?
