So all this stuff I'm about to type is more or less from stuff I've written in a notebook I had with me over the weekend, while I jaunted off to California and back. It wasn't written all at once, so it might be a little disjointed.
Start here:
(Saturday, 6am, Chicago Midway Airport, on the way to see Cannon Girl for a day)
Sweet Christ. I don't remember the last time I saw 4am after sleeping, unless maybe it was when I went fishing in Redondo with Henry, back in December, but I think even then we slept until about 5.
Took an hour to get to Midway, which is what I figured on, so that worked out alright. Really, the whole thing was painless, I should have slept at least another 30 minutes. Now, as a result, I get to sit here and listen to a gaggle of teenage girls whine and sigh at their parents for the next 90 minutes. I supposed I could move, but I'm flying Southwest and I'd risk losing my claim on a front spot in the line to race to a good seat. Good Lord, I hate flying this airline ... but it was the only option for a decent fare with less than two weeks' notice.
My hand is covered in little spatters of grease burns. I didn't even notice until just now. Those will start to itch soon.
(Sunday, 8pm or so, Estelle's, after getting back to Chicago)
Well, back from the trip, and working at the bar. There's no customers so far, probably because the Super Bowl is on. Fine by me, really; gives me some time to reflect on the trip.
Last night couldn't have been more perfect, I'm fairly sure. We first got to LA and headed to Angelini Osteria, a restaurant recommended to me by Henry ... and it was perhaps the best Italian food I've had. It really was an amazing dinner: to start, a small appetizer of scallops served in the shell, and a mixed field green salad with gorgonzola and pears. We split a half-bottle of Chianti Classico, and she had a green lasagna with beef and veal, with some flash-fried greens on top. I had lamb chops served on a bed of arugula. After, she had the tiramisu and I had a custard (hazelnut and coffee-flavored) with a dark chocolate gelatto, and we each had an espresso. Overall, one of the best meals I've had in ages.
After that, we rolled over to the Shrine Auditorium to see Bowie, where we had seats on row 17. The show was really great, and the setlist was fairly different from the one I saw in Chicago a couple weeks ago, which was great for me.
After the show, we drove back to her place in San Diego, had a few drinks, threw some darts, and turned in for the night. The flight this morning came super early, and now I'm up at work until 3am or so.
All in all, I'm not sure last night could have gone any better, and technically, it was our First Date.
Well ... we'll see what happens from here.
I guess the difficult thing, or one of them at least, is not letting her be the big focus right now, since for my own sake, I need to concentrate on school and my cooking career. She's trying to do the same with her school and finance career ... that's supposed to be our sort of agreement, is that we concentrate on our respective professional careers instead of whatever's going on between us, but emotion makes that difficult. Maybe it's because I just got back. Perhaps it won't feel so overwhelming in a few days.
I wonder if it would make things better or worse if I tried to see her more often -- like if we could see each other once a month or so. I'll have to talk to her about that. Bare minimum, it'd keep my frequent flier miles up (ha, ha).
We talked enough about things that I know, now, that she feels, like I do, that we have something special, and that we need to take our time and Do It Right. This is quite encouraging to me, after things being so (more or less necessarily) hazy between us for so long.
(later, same location)
Christ. Dollface came into work after hanging out with my ex-girlfriend most of the day. Kind of sounds like she's holding out hope that things won't happen with Cannon Girl and I ... like thinking it will crash and burn and I'll come back to her, hat in hand. What a mess. It's not that surprising, based on things she's said to me the last few weeks, I just keep expecting her to start getting over us splitting up. It's been a month, and we only dated for 3.

So that's the end of my weekend notes. Work started getting busy after that, and I didn't have time to write until now, at home, but I'm too tired to expound any more.
