TYPES OF RITUAL PROSTITUTES
(I wrote this for a book that came out from Prentice Hall Press called "Sex Lover's book of Lists)
1. Deva-dasi (also spelled devadaasii) - India. Deva-dasi is
Sanskrit for "slave of God." Deva-dasi were Hindu temple
prostitutes, who prostituted themselves both with the priests and
members of the public. Women became deva-dasi by either having a
mother who was one, or by being giving by her mother to the temple
at age 12. She was the wife of God and the representative of God.
Apparently she had to deflower herself ritually on a lingga--that
is, on a sacred dildo--and to sprinkle the blood from her broken
hymen on the lingga itself. A large temple might have had as many
as 100 deva-dasi in attendance.
2. Harimtu - Babylonian, a prostitute who became monogamous once
she was married. The word harimtu is related to Harem.
3. Hetaera - Greek - a courtesan, a woman who often started out her
career as a slave, but who in time made enough money to buy her
freedom. They were generally more "upper class" prostitutes, who
developed relationships with or even married their clients.
4. Hieroduli - Greek - sacred temple sex slaves. One temple of
Aphrodite (the Goddess of love) had over one thousand sacred
prostitutes associated with it.
5. Ishtaritu - Babylonian, servant of the love Goddess Ishtar,
either was a virgin, only having sex with the divine energy of
Ishtar, or a prostitute who only had sex with the most powerful and
successful men--which it was depends on who you ask.
6. Qadishtu - Babylonian, full-time temple prostitutes in the
Temples of Ishtar. Often women from important families and
successful in business, the qadishtu was a job often proudly handed
down from mother to daughter. She was a full-time prostitute,
servicing many men as (hopefully) a doorway to the divine.
"Prostitutes believe in marriage. It provides them with most of
their trade."
