Eleven months later and I've made it to the intermediate level of my practice -- I can now start practicing forms. The test yesterday lasted an hour, but it was a grueling hour.
I've never thrown harder technique -- I wish envisioning my elbows breaking ribs, my heito connecting devastatingly with someones temple, or a collarbone splintering under the force of my knifehand. And still,...

External validation is so 1999.

Anyways.

I am in love with my bestfriend. She is in love with my other bestfriend. At times such as now, the only way I can handle this situation, as to retain these two friends, is to detach. Detachment is not conducive to the deeply interpersonal relationships I maintain. Even when I can successfully retain these two deeply interpersonal relationships...

It's getting time for you to read the Tao of Jeet Kun Do by Bruce Lee. It changed my life and the way I view the martial arts forever.

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it. I think most people should start out in a martial art at a young age. The loss of structure, philosophy and myth in our society seems to have created generations of directionless people. I like the small villages in China where every child goes to a dojo of some sort. Perhaps our collective level of respect towards one another would go up if we did that. Eh, but what the fuck do I know?

I pulled a couple muscles in my neck at Jiu Jitsu so I've had to take about ten days off and it's driving me bonkers. I can't wait until Monday's class. That's one of the unfortunate side effects of smaller schools, they aren't open seven days a week. I fit in two or three days of training (2 hours + is our class length) but I'd like to do more. I don't know if my body could take it though.

Happy Holidays. Oh, if you're not already, start sparring. It really helps the techniques stick. Keep the updates coming. It's exciting to read about other peoples journeys in the martial arts.

I haven't studied much on Taoism to be honest. Primarily as it relates to training. I was impressed with how simple the concepts are, and yet how difficult the follow through can be, with Taoism. Reading Bruce Lee's booked really was amazing.

Let me know what you find on the subject.

You live in Royal Oak ???
I grew up there. on my last visit to my parents, downtown was totally invaded by yuppie bikers. When I was a kid you could have played street hockey on Washington with few car breaks.

I dedicate this song, Dead Flowers, (as sung by Townes Van Zandt, not the Stones, please keep that in mind) to someone who fucking sucks.

Dead Flowers

Well, when you're sitting there
In your silk upholstered chair
Talking to some rich folks that you know
Well I hope you won't see me
In my ragged company
You know I could never be alone

Take me...
