On Dreams

This morning, upon waking, I had two realizations. The first being that, in the night I relived a handful of dreams from my childhood. The second being that I had another apocalyptic nightmare.

When I say nightmare I always feel that word is too strong because I never wake up scared from them, the subject matter is only scary, especially when the whole world ends up in ruin. To this day I've had seven apocalypse nightmares and I cherish them only as stories.

Now some of my childhood dreams are real nightmares when I woke up crying, afraid to go back to sleep and I'm going to describe the few I remember now twelve hours after waking.

1. The Lego Man- As a child I was obsessed by Lego's. I had a bazillion of them and played with them at least once a day but one night I had a dream. I was maybe nine...later in childhood for silly nightmares. My brother an I were playing with the rainbow of Lego's in their respective container when all of the sudden they started to raise out of the box and form a body and it said it was going to get us. We ran and ran looking for our parents but they weren't found (I was actually mad at them for a while because of this). We hid in our parents closet, the safest place on the planet (you'll see why). Only there was a window next to it where there wasn't in real life. We were huddled together, crying, when the Lego Man burst through the window and said, "I gotcha", and grabbed my brother taking him into the darkness.

I woke up at somewhere around three.

2. The Tunnels- I had this when I was maybe six. I was just following someone or something through a series of endless tunnels that changes shape, direction, texture, and brightness. It was a simple dream that just an exploration of places but had a tinge of fear or urgency behind it. I remember it greatly.

I woke up at somewhere around four

3. The Giant- Almost the same thing as the Lego Man but I was seven. I distinctly remember going to my second grade teacher and telling her this dream in late spring after giving up on school. I was watching TV with my brother and sister when we felt a slight rumble. We looked to each other and then another one hit only stronger. Then another and another, then we looked out the window and saw a giant sandal-ed foot slide past and we panicked. We ran again into my parent's closet and hid and felt as the giant wandered up and down Huber street looking for children to eat. We felt as the steps got stronger and stronger and then stopped. We waited. We waited for a long time and decided we were safe and stepped out. Just as we were about to leave their room the giant pulled the roof off the house and peered in at us with mean dark eyes.

I woke up a little later.

4. Red Afternoon- I had a perfectly normal day a school but as I walked closer to house the sky and earth turned to orange. I walked up to my house in shambles. I walked around calling out everyone's name but no one answered. I started to panic and realized they were just outside so I went to the backyard and after a moment of searching found our dog, Nina, decaying to almost nothing but bone. I woke up knowing it was nuclear war. I asked my mom about it the next day and she thought that a third grader shouldn't know what nuclear war was.

I woke up at five and got a drink of water.

This was my dream from last night, a two part-er.

Apocolytica- The first part was I was with a black fellow and Lady Sovereign. We were on some kind of adventure wadding through a river and having wonderful conversation. All the sudden Lady Sovereign stubbed her foot on something unseen. She pulled out a small green munitions box from the army. She opened it up and almost started to cry, we went to her aide but she held us off as she sifted through the contents. She looked at me and smiled. I asked her what was in there and said in her thick British accent, "It's you". I looked in there puzzled and say small relics from my past; toys, books, candies, birthday cards, cloths, rocks, nic-nacs and everything else. I closed the lid and put it back in the water, took her hand and led her to a party. I told everyone that a famous rapper was smitten with me and we all shared good laughs just as all the TVs came on (hundreds of them) to tell us that a huge band of asteroids were heading straight for Earth and certain doom would ensue. Mild panic and the reporter said that Hollywood had already produced a feature film with famous actors about what it would be like and what to do in the situation and that it was free to everyone to see as many times as they would like. I refused to see the film and suddenly I was in a convenience store as the asteroids started pummeling the planet. I watched people crushed by these giant boulders, people just run over to get up and run away, people break the boulders before they hit. Somehow the physics were wrong. Every boulder landed in a different way. Never smashing the earth the way a cataclysmic asteroid would but more like someone were dropping things from the sky. People started to not be afraid anymore and came out of doors and played with the boulders even though there were millions upon millions of fatalities because of it. People were taking pictures with the rocks and rolling them around town. Suddenly across the sky flashed the words, "We're sorry". The news came back on and it was announced that it was first contact with another sentient race and they were trying to dominate us though fear and everyone started laughing at the sky and hundreds of space ships started falling from the sky and everyone was happy in the ruined world because humanity prevailed.

I woke up and had a wonderful day full of self doubt about hating my job but it was rectified by a fabulous lunch my mother made for me and my job after lunch. I got use an acetylene torch to take out an eight and a half foot steel fence for four hours.

Sometimes destroying something is more satisfying than making something beautiful.

I once thought it was the apocalypse in London. It was 4 am, and it was the first time I'd noticed summer was here (hence morning sunshine), my neighbours were cutting down a tree (yep, at 4am). So, my instinct, sunshine + grinding noise= the apocalypse. I woke my flatmate up, told her I loved her, sent people at home some emails and went back to bed. Come on 4 horsemen!
