Congenital Hip Dysplasia/Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH)
... alternative title: "I got a scanner for my birthday and I have interesting pics to share"

LPCH.org definition: Developmental dysplasia of the hip is a congenital (present at birth) condition of the hip joint. It occurs once in every 1,000 live births. The hip joint is created as a ball and socket joint. In DDH, the hip socket may be shallow, letting the "ball" of the long leg bone, also known as the femoral head, slip in and out of the socket. The "ball" may move partially or completely out of the hip socket.

In the hospital with my legs in traction (the purpose of traction is to stretch the soft tissues around the hip and to allow the femoral head to move back into the hip socket). This lasted two weeks.

Once I was finished with traction, I was put into a "spica" cast.

These days, spica casts are fiberglass and relatively light... mine however, was plaster and weighed a LOT.

I spent a lot of time on the floor

Me being in a cast presented some problems for day to day stuff...

they didn't make special car seats for babies in casts like mine. Thankfully, my mom's old Dodge van had the engine between the two front seats that I could be strapped to (my mom is a pretty ingenious lady).

I wish I could find pics of the skateboard she made me to roll around on... the cast was too heavy for me to drag myself too far - a piece of plywood, some couch casters, some foam padding and a vinyl cover and all of a sudden I could get around biggrin

this is how I bathed

As I grew, the cast was changed - every six weeks or so. Eventually, the doctors cut it back to my knees, which allowed some more movement. Towards the end of my adventures in the cast, I could stand and even walk a few steps
