With a bit of help from the support team, I was able to get a payment through the system, so though my account did end up closed for a few hours, I am back!
In the end, I did end up buying myself a "gift" account so the card company would see it as a regular "purchase" instead of as a "recurring payment". Figured I might as well go for a full year so that I don't have to go through this again for awhile!
I don't even own any credit cards, and already I despise credit card companies! Shunting you from department to department, one person telling you "No. Well, maybe", the next one telling you "Yes, definitely no problem, this other department will do it for you right away", the third saying "That's impossible!" until you rub their nose in the wording of the application form that proves they don't know what they are talking about, where-upon they concede and send you back to one of the previous departments, who says "We can't do that -- but your branch manager can do it for you if you see them in person."
At least I ended up getting told a way forward, though.
