Despite all of the crap I have to do in the lab, I'm taking a somewhat relaxed approach to work today.
I haven't updated in a while, and I don't really have any good reason for it other than I've been kind of zoning out and not thinking about a whole lot these past few days. So I figured I would avoid a journal entry...

I had an interesting conversation with this psychiatrist who works in my lab. It seems in his spare time he's created this alter ego called Horace P. Osterdonk (if you google his name you'll find him in a few message boards, he's pretty funny) and posted on a couple of different internet forums with this name, seeing what sorts of responses he gets. Horace is...

exactly why i try not to get involved in CE discussions and whatnot. it's just not worth it.

i already moved. i paid movers. i'm not into the painful experience of renting a truck and getting all my friend to help. that is way toooo stressful.
To everyone who is no longer on my friends list: I removed you not because I dislike you, but because we don't see each other in real life, and we don't talk back and forth in our journals, so technically we aren't "friends." You can always add me again if it bothers you.

Hey there!
Yeah I was fired up about that comment. That's just wrong to do on the day their set goes up. Jesus.
If you're talking about the set in Hopefuls called HIM Lover, I self shot that. I had to use the flash (blech, I hate the flash!) because there wasn't enough light in my room. BUT, I still like how it turned out. And thanks for the compliments!!
Why arent you on my friends list, dammit?

There's isn't a no flash 'rule' per se, but it's sort of frowned on. I know I'd personally much rather see the girls under natural light or white bulb lighting. You can see their pretty creamy skin better.
Yay! Now we're officially "friends."

First off, I'd like to thank everyone for their interesting replies to my last journal entry, it was fun reading them and hearing what people have to say about modern vs. classical art forms.
What's funny is that the day after I wrote that I went to see this band play whose leader is the former first trumpet for the Metropolitan opera. So he certainly...

The show is next Tuesday too ... sans Lanna though as we are off to maine early early the next day

Interesting. Now I seem to be able to access SG from work again. I'm not entirely sure what this means, but I'm not going to argue with it, I guess.
Last night I went to see opera in the park with some friends from the lab. The opera was Puccini's Madame Butterfly, which is one of my favorite non-Wagner operas, and even though the singing...

The third day was easy. I've successfully avoided jury selection and am now free and clear for the next four years. Whew.
I'm working through Monday because next week I'm going to be volunteering for a medical research study that is bound to debilitate me. Yep, for those of you who wonder how I am able to continue to enjoy the lifestyle to which have...

No problemo; I actually didn't have very much to say about it and what I wrote was very AP style, very blah. I've been writing a ton about that case for a writing competition, so I was kind of on a roll.
I'm a research assistant for two professors, which means I spend a lot of time in the library reading and writing. It's kind of like classes never ended.
As a future member of the legal profession, I am shocked, yes shocked to learn you wanted to get out of jury duty. Good luck with the medical experiment.

She seems like quite a character. I'm sure she's well known in NY, I've never heard of her before.
Last night I saw the movie 'Mean Girls.' It was funny - I think Lindsay Lohan gets a bad rap just because she's cute and has likely already had plastic surgery at the age of 17. She's actually a decent actress. The supporting cast.... was OK. Some ups and downs. I do think the casting director had a bad case of what I call 'the...

i thnk its a physical thing more than anything. growth spurts, hormones, discovering sex, etc. plus then there is the stress of living with parents, or guardians, presumably under certain 'rules' or restrictions, while trying to define your self as an independant adult as well. its a crazy time, and people react in strange ways to the stress, especially if they cant identify it.
poopoohead:
Personally, I don't see much difference between people as adults and people in highschool. I think HS is the place where you get stamped for what you'll be in society, for the most part. And most people just go along with what they are stamped as. I just heard a BLOG on NPR, where the guy laments being a sci-fi geek and how people look at him. The man is 30! He still acts the way a HS geek acts. Same thing when I hang out with geeks I know and they CAN'T talk to girls.
Now, when I go into a client environment, like an office, I see the same thing playing out in the adults. Every one seems essentially the same type as they were in HS.
I never went to college, so I can't say about that. But the reason I didn't go, was when I got out of HS, it was like getting out of jail. I hated it so much, I wasn't going back.
But it's like I said, HS is where you get stamped, because now the idea of having a real job ( as opposed to contracts ) is about as disgusting to me as HS was then.

It's been an incredibly busy couple of days, but I've finally got a spare minute to update my journal.
Thanks to everyone who replied to my last journal entry. It was a bit of a rant about misperceptions about scientists. However, based on what I've heard from other people I think I've changed my tune.

wow, it's always great to stumble upon another scientist on this site. I hate all those stereotypes, but like you said all jobs have those. sometimes you gotta laugh to your self when people say stupid stuff like, "so you went to college for that, right?" or "You just mix things together" or "science is hard...yeah." my brother also is a scientist. he had finished his PhD this year. he started with an MD/PhD program and traded it in for the PhD program because the cadavors made him sick on a daily basis. People don't understand the work that goes into a degree like this. it always made me mad when he got hell for not being a "real doctor." later.

I try really hard not to go on a rant in my journals, but I think it's unavoidable today, I need to get some of this off my chest. This morning I was stuck on the subway trying to get to the lab (and missing a bunch of seminars that I really wanted to hear, including John Searle) and this annoying tourist woman standing next...

If it's any consolation, the lumpenprole tourist population is pretty bad and pretty fucking clueless about even the most basic mass transit courtesy here in DC.
I came by your journal to suggest you consider using TeX for your chess match. Maybe .dvi would give you less trouble?

Some of my favorite TV characters are scientists. . . Invader Zim and Dexter to name a few.
I'd like to leave off with a quote from (but of course) the Simpsons.
Marge- Homer there's someone here who can help you!
Homer-Is it Batman?
Marge-No, it's a Scientist!
Homer-Batman's a Scientist!
Marge- IT'S NOT BATMAN!

Ah, I finally have internet at home again, which is nice.
I was reading this thread today in CE and it got me thinking. About politics (what else?
). More specifically, about the people who founded the United States. Now that Washington, Jefferson, Paine, Adams, Franklin etc. have all become historical figures, we've changed them into these grandiose ideas who said and did great things,...
