I've noticed that my general level of agitation has drastically increased ever since the Republican National Convention began in New York. I think I'm just pissed off in general that all of the top Republicans are strutting around the most Democratic city in the country acting like they own the place. So here's a message from me to all of the delegates, speakers and elected...

I haven't updated since Monday. My schedule has become bizarrely inverted. For whatever reason all of my experiments need to be done on the weekends and I've been staying up really late and waking up really late. I'm not entirely sure what it means, or why. The net result is that I'm finding weekday afternoons have become my time off, while nights and weekends I'm...

I went to the protest and even got my picture in the paper on Monday (carrying) the no bush sign that looks like an anti smoking sign ... green shirt under the U on the front page ....

Its getting weirded though ... arresting people for anything last 2 days

That was certainly an entertaining weekend. A slight mishap in mouse breeding left me with nothing to do in the lab, placing me in the unusual position of actually having my weekend off (one in which I will unfortunately not be for the upcoming weekend.) Did I take the opportunity to soak up some of New York city's beautiful culture? No. In fact, I wasted...

what a fantastic weekend. smile -- i spent mine recovering from moving (napping) and doing responsible things (going shopping with my wife like i promised, doing laundry). but it was still better than lugging around entertainment centers and sofas..... wink

re: the freedom of grad school. i'm actually SO bad about enjoying the freedom of grad school. i'm so protestant (and i'm not even protestant...), that i feel like i should always be working. what really happens is that i waste a lot of time during the day online or reading things i'm not supposed to, and i work sporadically off and on all day most days. i never really take 'the day off'' grad school. i just have godd work days and light work days. i wish i could get mor discipline, and work hard core most days so i could take some days just completley off. but so it goes. each to their own.

Legionnaire gets litigious

That's the title for today's journal entry. In general I'm not much of a fan of the overly litigious nature of the American public, which seems to only be worsening. The notion of "jackpot justice" seems to be poorly conceived, as I believe that the role of the civil court system should be to address wrongs rather than to dispense rewards to...

Hey, nice meeting you the other night too.

Sorry about the landlord troubles. I have been very very fortunate in NYC with my apartments and have never had a nasty landlord experience. But then again, I always rent from individuals and families, never rental companies. Good luck.

I was not around too much last week, due to my life taking off with me, and may not be around too much this week as well. But soon.

ARGH!! I'm so pissed, I didn't get your message until we were on our way home from the SOIA show. mad I bet it was a good night, though. I'll be back for the holidays, if not sooner. I can't wait til you come back to visit CA!! I'll go to that football game, I'm good at cheering and heckling.

It's been a while since I last updated. Saturday was fun, I finally got to hang out with SGNY for the first time in what seems like forever. I met a bunch of cool new people, as well as seeing all of my old SGNY friends. And I got to meet Narcissus, on vacation in NYC, which was fun. I think, however, that next...

so um, next sunday is good for you to come cook dinner for me, say around 7:30? yes? great. Take the Q train to park slope. biggrin

Oh, and even though Z says everyone that comes over to my place gets molested, It actually all depends on how good the dinner is first!

And yes, I will be hosting an XBox party within the next few weeks. Nerds only, please. wink

First time I ever got props for a newswire sub. I didn't even notice it went up, thanks for tipping me off and (of course) thanks for the friendly note. Occasionally I get the desire to go crazy and really "make my mark" in the newswire, then I realize it's too much damn work. Sometimes something like that pops up, though, and it's hard to resist. Glad you liked it.

Again, it's been a while since I've updated. I'm currently in grant writing hell, with my second resubmission of my NIH grant due on August 5th, and yet I continue to procrastinate and stare at the computer screen, not making progress. Oh well.

A conversation in the current events board made me remember an interesting historical event. Apparently biblical scholars in the 1970's discovered that,...

It seems like it's been forever since I've updated my journal. I'm ridiculously busy right now - I have my grant resubmission due on August 5th and I'm woefully unprepared for it...

Considering how I tend to pass out by 10 or 11 pm on the west coast, I think I'll just head over after we get in. We'll be too jetlagged to come back to the city after we head home, so we'll hang til like 9. I'll come in again, I'd just like to at least make the open event and also give a kiss to Sita.

I can't say what it's like in science...and being a social worker meant being surrounded by women...

I think I had a bigger reputation in social work for being a bitch because I wasn't all soft and fuzzy. I have a very strict work ethic and insist on a level of integrity from my co-workers.

I've actually found that men, when I'd have to deal with them, would be much more responsive to that than the women I worked with. I don't allow bullshit and I think they appreciated that. (social workers can be very wishy-washy)

Now...I'm surrounded by boys and men...and I think the same kind of thing applies at first. I'm actually quite easy going...right up until you slack off or don't show me the respect I deserve. At which point I will let you know that you have crossed a line somewhere...and that while we're all casual, fine and good, I'm the fucking boss.

So long as we're understood...we're back to casual, fine and good. Meaning, don't misunderstand my easygoingness as weakness.

I suspect I could run into a bad reputation for being a bitch in this field...with some people...the ones who don't show me respect. But generally, the number of people who DO respect me is higher than those who don't. And it ends up being THOSE guys who develop the bad reputation for being assholes.

Or maybe, it's just 'cuz I'm a very likable bitch?

ooo aaa By far the best of the SG smilies. Such is the reason (and prodding from Irina, doineanta and others) for today's journal entry, which is about chimpanzees.

The initial question was about chimpanzees and "thiri remarkable similarity to humans." There's an easy answer to this question, but it serves as a springboard for what I consider to be an interesting discussion. Here's the answer:...

I've been reading Simon Baron Cohen's book "The Essential Difference", which isn't about monkeys per se but he says something about how sometimes 50% of adolescent male monkeys die in "manhood proving" fights with other monkeys. shocked

Meantime, per your comment in my journal: TheFuckOffGirl wouldn't really join the site, it's not her thing, but she does like me to write about her and for people to comment. She has her own little cult of personality thing at SG without even being a member and she's quite pleased about that. wink

thanks for the encouragement! between your praise and the new offer of 15 army pts per, it really gives me a reason to stick it to the right! not that my articles aren't fair and balanced, but...

also, you should check out a great book called "The Journey of Man" by Spencer Wells, if you haven't already. he's one of the leading researchers of mitochondrial DNA and how it relates to our evolutionary origins from the first "adam & eve" fascinating stuff. for instance, did you know that the mitochondria in human cells were originally a parasite in the first single-celled organisms? they have been assimilated and now serve as the power plant of the cells. they are also more reliable in tracing back the DNA from us to the original than the DNA strands in the nucleus, mostly because of the lower rate of mutation.

hey, the more you know, right?

cheers...

God damn it. I had written a whole freaking journal entry about bonobo chimps that got deleted by an errant mouse click.

I'll rewrite later. Sorry.

I promised an entry about interesting biological problems, and one will be forthcoming. However, right now I have something more important and imminent that I'd like to discuss.

As many of you know, I'm currently a graduate student at a major university in New York city. Over the last three years there has been a concerted effort by most of the graduate students here to...

I can't say I'm surprised frown

Not only by the republican machine...but by the fact that they'd refuse to acknowledge the 'smaller' people who help them out.

Seriously, it was stuff like that which influenced my decision to leave the field of social services. I LIKED what I did...I hated the bureaucratic machine...the policy makers who made all the decisions but weren't the ones doing the work.

I was union in my first job...and non-union in my last one. I can't say that the union helped very much in the first job...but it definitely made me feel better to have the bargaining tool there. To have what little protection they offered. I swore, after my last job, that I wouldn't take another job unless it offered membership in the union. Any union...
