Again, it's been a while since I've updated. I'm currently in grant writing hell, with my second resubmission of my NIH grant due on August 5th, and yet I continue to procrastinate and stare at the computer screen, not making progress. Oh well.

A conversation in the current events board made me remember an interesting historical event. Apparently biblical scholars in the 1970's discovered that,...

Before I start: See that link above here that says Vote for DebraJean! Well click on it and vote for her, dammit! We now return to our regularly scheduled programming, already in progress:

It seems like it's been forever since I've updated my journal. I'm ridiculously busy right now - I have my grant resubmission due on August 5th and I'm woefully unprepared for it...

Considering how I tend to pass out by 10 or 11 pm on the west coast, I think I'll just head over after we get in. We'll be too jetlagged to come back to the city after we head home, so we'll hang til like 9. I'll come in again, I'd just like to at least make the open event and also give a kiss to Sita.

I can't say what it's like in science...and being a social worker meant being surrounded by women...

I think I had a bigger reputation in social work for being a bitch because I wasn't all soft and fuzzy. I have a very strict work ethic and insist on a level of integrity from my co-workers.

I've actually found that men, when I'd have to deal with them, would be much more responsive to that than the women I worked with. I don't allow bullshit and I think they appreciated that. (social workers can be very wishy-washy)

Now...I'm surrounded by boys and men...and I think the same kind of thing applies at first. I'm actually quite easy going...right up until you slack off or don't show me the respect I deserve. At which point I will let you know that you have crossed a line somewhere...and that while we're all casual, fine and good, I'm the fucking boss.

So long as we're understood...we're back to casual, fine and good. Meaning, don't misunderstand my easygoingness as weakness.

I suspect I could run into a bad reputation for being a bitch in this field...with some people...the ones who don't show me respect. But generally, the number of people who DO respect me is higher than those who don't. And it ends up being THOSE guys who develop the bad reputation for being assholes.

Or maybe, it's just 'cuz I'm a very likable bitch?

ooo aaa By far the best of the SG smilies. Such is the reason (and prodding from Irina, doineanta and others) for today's journal entry, which is about chimpanzees.

The initial question was about chimpanzees and "thiri remarkable similarity to humans." There's an easy answer to this question, but it serves as a springboard for what I consider to be an interesting discussion. Here's the answer:...

I've been reading Simon Baron Cohen's book "The Essential Difference", which isn't about monkeys per se but he says something about how sometimes 50% of adolescent male monkeys die in "manhood proving" fights with other monkeys. shocked

Meantime, per your comment in my journal: TheFuckOffGirl wouldn't really join the site, it's not her thing, but she does like me to write about her and for people to comment. She has her own little cult of personality thing at SG without even being a member and she's quite pleased about that. wink

thanks for the encouragement! between your praise and the new offer of 15 army pts per, it really gives me a reason to stick it to the right! not that my articles aren't fair and balanced, but...

also, you should check out a great book called "The Journey of Man" by Spencer Wells, if you haven't already. he's one of the leading researchers of mitochondrial DNA and how it relates to our evolutionary origins from the first "adam & eve" fascinating stuff. for instance, did you know that the mitochondria in human cells were originally a parasite in the first single-celled organisms? they have been assimilated and now serve as the power plant of the cells. they are also more reliable in tracing back the DNA from us to the original than the DNA strands in the nucleus, mostly because of the lower rate of mutation.

hey, the more you know, right?

cheers...

God damn it. I had written a whole freaking journal entry about bonobo chimps that got deleted by an errant mouse click.

I'll rewrite later. Sorry.

In the mean time, enjoy this website.

I promised an entry about interesting biological problems, and one will be forthcoming. However, right now I have something more important and imminent that I'd like to discuss.

As many of you know, I'm currently a graduate student at a major university in New York city. Over the last three years there has been a concerted effort by most of the graduate students here to...

Is it just me or is there a much higher loss rate of SG members??
holliday:
I can't say I'm surprised frown

Not only by the republican machine...but by the fact that they'd refuse to acknowledge the 'smaller' people who help them out.

Seriously, it was stuff like that which influenced my decision to leave the field of social services. I LIKED what I did...I hated the bureaucratic machine...the policy makers who made all the decisions but weren't the ones doing the work.

I was union in my first job...and non-union in my last one. I can't say that the union helped very much in the first job...but it definitely made me feel better to have the bargaining tool there. To have what little protection they offered. I swore, after my last job, that I wouldn't take another job unless it offered membership in the union. Any union...

Despite all of the crap I have to do in the lab, I'm taking a somewhat relaxed approach to work today.

I haven't updated in a while, and I don't really have any good reason for it other than I've been kind of zoning out and not thinking about a whole lot these past few days. So I figured I would avoid a journal entry...

I had an interesting conversation with this psychiatrist who works in my lab. It seems in his spare time he's created this alter ego called Horace P. Osterdonk (if you google his name you'll find him in a few message boards, he's pretty funny) and posted on a couple of different internet forums with this name, seeing what sorts of responses he gets. Horace is...

To everyone who is no longer on my friends list: I removed you not because I dislike you, but because we don't see each other in real life, and we don't talk back and forth in our journals, so technically we aren't "friends." You can always add me again if it bothers you.

After my orgy of science this past weekend, I've slowed things down...

Hey there!
Yeah I was fired up about that comment. That's just wrong to do on the day their set goes up. Jesus.
If you're talking about the set in Hopefuls called HIM Lover, I self shot that. I had to use the flash (blech, I hate the flash!) because there wasn't enough light in my room. BUT, I still like how it turned out. And thanks for the compliments!!

smile

Why arent you on my friends list, dammit?
mercie:
There's isn't a no flash 'rule' per se, but it's sort of frowned on. I know I'd personally much rather see the girls under natural light or white bulb lighting. You can see their pretty creamy skin better. biggrin
Yay! Now we're officially "friends."

First off, I'd like to thank everyone for their interesting replies to my last journal entry, it was fun reading them and hearing what people have to say about modern vs. classical art forms.

What's funny is that the day after I wrote that I went to see this band play whose leader is the former first trumpet for the Metropolitan opera. So he certainly...

Interesting. Now I seem to be able to access SG from work again. I'm not entirely sure what this means, but I'm not going to argue with it, I guess.

Last night I went to see opera in the park with some friends from the lab. The opera was Puccini's Madame Butterfly, which is one of my favorite non-Wagner operas, and even though the singing...

The third day was easy. I've successfully avoided jury selection and am now free and clear for the next four years. Whew.

I'm working through Monday because next week I'm going to be volunteering for a medical research study that is bound to debilitate me. Yep, for those of you who wonder how I am able to continue to enjoy the lifestyle to which have...

No problemo; I actually didn't have very much to say about it and what I wrote was very AP style, very blah. I've been writing a ton about that case for a writing competition, so I was kind of on a roll.

I'm a research assistant for two professors, which means I spend a lot of time in the library reading and writing. It's kind of like classes never ended.

As a future member of the legal profession, I am shocked, yes shocked to learn you wanted to get out of jury duty. Good luck with the medical experiment.

Last night I saw the movie 'Mean Girls.' It was funny - I think Lindsay Lohan gets a bad rap just because she's cute and has likely already had plastic surgery at the age of 17. She's actually a decent actress. The supporting cast.... was OK. Some ups and downs. I do think the casting director had a bad case of what I call 'the...

i thnk its a physical thing more than anything. growth spurts, hormones, discovering sex, etc. plus then there is the stress of living with parents, or guardians, presumably under certain 'rules' or restrictions, while trying to define your self as an independant adult as well. its a crazy time, and people react in strange ways to the stress, especially if they cant identify it.
poopoohead:
Personally, I don't see much difference between people as adults and people in highschool. I think HS is the place where you get stamped for what you'll be in society, for the most part. And most people just go along with what they are stamped as. I just heard a BLOG on NPR, where the guy laments being a sci-fi geek and how people look at him. The man is 30! He still acts the way a HS geek acts. Same thing when I hang out with geeks I know and they CAN'T talk to girls.

Now, when I go into a client environment, like an office, I see the same thing playing out in the adults. Every one seems essentially the same type as they were in HS.

I never went to college, so I can't say about that. But the reason I didn't go, was when I got out of HS, it was like getting out of jail. I hated it so much, I wasn't going back.

But it's like I said, HS is where you get stamped, because now the idea of having a real job ( as opposed to contracts ) is about as disgusting to me as HS was then.
