Wow, I just got whacked in the face with the nastiest sickness I've ever had. My sincerest hopes to everyone I saw this weekend that I didn't infect any of you with it. I'm pretty sure it was the flu, but damn, I had no idea the flu could be that bad.

I wrote a journal entry last year (at Minty's request, for those...

Indeed, it would be nice to meet up with members from the site. The strange part of it though, is most of the ones I communicate with the most are on your side of the country or LA. Damn the luck.

Hope you are feeling better. smile

Play this game at your own risk. Seriously. Don't say I didn't warn you - it's absurdly addictive. My high score is 25666, with 180 squares. Top that.

Edited to say that my high score is now 30603, 199 squares.

Edited again to say that I believe I have now set the world record for this game, with 54712 points and 268 squares.

I need...

Have you ever wondered about geekiness? Before the more literal minded of you decide to correct me and point out that the derivation of the word "geek" comes from a circus sideshow freak in early 20th century traveling fairs, I would just like to point out the evolution of this word to its modern colloquial meaning is still designed to imply someone different from everyone...

werd. i'm actually not sure how i feel about this. but for fun, i'll take the devil's advocate slot, albeit with a grain or two of salt.
i think one way to think about this is jack kirby vs. pablo picasso. both are nearly contemporary, and are giants in their field (comic books and modern art). so, what's the difference? well. kirby had a vivid imagination, could work fast, had an apptitude for developing characters people could love, was a good draftsman (anatomy, design), and a strong storyteller. picasso had excellent skills in a number of mediums, was interested in the human condition, experimented with new forms of artistic expression, and was also a talented draftsman (to use a generic term).
now, there is a fair amount of overlap here... BUT despite the deep love i have for classic marvel characters, i would have to say that picasso beats out kirby. ultimately, picasso is working on Big Ideas and addressing the Human Condition in a direct way, that Kirby at best only sort of plays with. picasso takes work to penetrate and understand. kirby kind of lays it out there. 'getting' picasso suggests a kind of intelligence and intuition that 'getting' the fantastic four just does not have.
now, this doesn't mean that one is somehow wholesale better (see, this is where i pull the kerry and hedge my bets heheheh). both are worthwhile - kirby had tons of talent, and escapism is great stuff. but i think that a story told for fun and an existential piece of art ... i dunno. there are not a different species per say, but there is a qualitative difference there.
in terms of geekiness of course - if you're just repeating what your art professor said (or what the guy at the comic book claims) - you're a tool anyway you slice that pie. wink

It's been over a week since I've updated, and not for any particular reason . I seem to start each week planning on updating more often and then things don't work out that way. Oh well.

I'm still in the lab, pulling another all-nighter trying to get some more data. I'm not particularly optimistic though - the first time I tried the experiment there was...

i'd just like to ad that (IMHO) Marxism is flawed in more reasons than just human nature. One of the biggest flaws is that there is no room for conflict. But if i start tearing apart marx i'll never stop. . . soooooo..

on to the greater point. . ..the rampant consumerism in this country, and on top of that, the complete ingnorance to the fact that we (americans) are completely at the mercy of "products". I probably can not expresses my opinion on this subject matter fully and clearly in a simple little journal comment, so i wont try. But i would like to say that it sickens me. Fucking naves. Zombies. Growl.

Are you planning on making the KO mice for your project, or use ones that are already made? If you're making them, any thought to tissue-specific or inducible KO's? I probably already asked you this, so bear with me.

Very interesting results. I suppose a lot more data and a few statistics should help figure out whether you have results consistent with synchronous vesicle release or an increase in the response on the postsynaptic side. I would imagine either way would be novel for the CNS, and therefore a good result.

By the way, nice wig-busting.

I've noticed that my general level of agitation has drastically increased ever since the Republican National Convention began in New York. I think I'm just pissed off in general that all of the top Republicans are strutting around the most Democratic city in the country acting like they own the place. So here's a message from me to all of the delegates, speakers and elected...

I haven't updated since Monday. My schedule has become bizarrely inverted. For whatever reason all of my experiments need to be done on the weekends and I've been staying up really late and waking up really late. I'm not entirely sure what it means, or why. The net result is that I'm finding weekday afternoons have become my time off, while nights and weekends I'm...

That was certainly an entertaining weekend. A slight mishap in mouse breeding left me with nothing to do in the lab, placing me in the unusual position of actually having my weekend off (one in which I will unfortunately not be for the upcoming weekend.) Did I take the opportunity to soak up some of New York city's beautiful culture? No. In fact, I wasted...

what a fantastic weekend. smile -- i spent mine recovering from moving (napping) and doing responsible things (going shopping with my wife like i promised, doing laundry). but it was still better than lugging around entertainment centers and sofas..... wink

re: the freedom of grad school. i'm actually SO bad about enjoying the freedom of grad school. i'm so protestant (and i'm not even protestant...), that i feel like i should always be working. what really happens is that i waste a lot of time during the day online or reading things i'm not supposed to, and i work sporadically off and on all day most days. i never really take 'the day off'' grad school. i just have godd work days and light work days. i wish i could get mor discipline, and work hard core most days so i could take some days just completley off. but so it goes. each to their own.

Legionnaire gets litigious

That's the title for today's journal entry. In general I'm not much of a fan of the overly litigious nature of the American public, which seems to only be worsening. The notion of "jackpot justice" seems to be poorly conceived, as I believe that the role of the civil court system should be to address wrongs rather than to dispense rewards to...

Hey, nice meeting you the other night too.

Sorry about the landlord troubles. I have been very very fortunate in NYC with my apartments and have never had a nasty landlord experience. But then again, I always rent from individuals and families, never rental companies. Good luck.

I was not around too much last week, due to my life taking off with me, and may not be around too much this week as well. But soon.

ARGH!! I'm so pissed, I didn't get your message until we were on our way home from the SOIA show. mad I bet it was a good night, though. I'll be back for the holidays, if not sooner. I can't wait til you come back to visit CA!! I'll go to that football game, I'm good at cheering and heckling.

It's been a while since I last updated. Saturday was fun, I finally got to hang out with SGNY for the first time in what seems like forever. I met a bunch of cool new people, as well as seeing all of my old SGNY friends. And I got to meet Narcissus, on vacation in NYC, which was fun. I think, however, that next...

First time I ever got props for a newswire sub. I didn't even notice it went up, thanks for tipping me off and (of course) thanks for the friendly note. Occasionally I get the desire to go crazy and really "make my mark" in the newswire, then I realize it's too much damn work. Sometimes something like that pops up, though, and it's hard to resist. Glad you liked it.
