I would like to get more active in the community, and I suppose that starts with being more active on the site period. I think I'll begin with sharing a bit about me, but how to begin?
I am Kelly and I live in Atlanta. I have worked for Starbucks for 7 years, first to help me pay to continue school and eventually as a crutch to maintain my ambition-light habits. Those awesome benefits can definitely suck you in and hold on tight. My husband pushed for me to either make a decision to move up in the company (as was offered) or find something that I actually give a shit about.
Thankfully, now I'm dropped down to part time and really only work on the weekends because I found a thing that really grabbed me! I have a degree in psychology and racked up ooooh a shit ton of student loans (yay, private schools) and finally decided that I didn't want to continue to rack up that loan debt at this time by moving on into a grad program and beyond. The things that sort of pulled me toward them have been food and film, not exactly interests that (I thought) could lend me into a career.
I discussed this with some former coworkers of mine, and a friend said, "hey! My husband works for a big advertising agency and they have their own production company. Maybe he could get you on a set!" Mere days later, I heard from the company's main director, asking about my interest and ability. Weeks after that I was on a relatively large commercial set, working my butt off for (at least) 12 hours a day. Even if it was grunt work, I really loved it.
Since September, I've been a production assistant as frequently as I can get work and I still love it. My goals in the industry are still relatively low because I am not sure what area I want to go into. I just got work on my first tv show and I guess I did all right, because they hired me on for the whole season. My first major goal was to be able to put my name on imdb, so I'm pretty much there.
My husband is a nerdy software engineer, and I'm thankful that he has pushed me to figure out what to do with myself long term. I'm also incredibly lucky that software engineers make good enough that I can actually afford to figure that shit out.
That is all for now, because I've already been drawn out and boring enough. I'll try to get decent at posting regularly. I'll also maybe add some pictures soon. We'll see.
