I just finished watching the Netflix miniseries Maniac, and by the end I was crying. Not bawling, but definitely misty-eyed. I tend to have a rather flat affect which gives people the impression that my emotional range is constricted, but a surprising number of things make my cry. The end of the Iron Giant, for example; no matter how many times I watch that film,...

Lately I've been making a few changes to my daily routine, the most important of which has been that I leave my smartphone plugged in when I do things around the house. This has led to a cascade of improvements. First, everything gets done faster. I didn't realize just how much of a time sink a smartphone is; for instance, in the past when I...

@gypsyraelynn, waking up early is a pretty easy change to commit to when you have a cat who wakes you up at 4:30 because she wants you to feed her and will not be denied.

Hahaha @jewishblues those relentless fur balls

Kerfuffle: I'm not sure why I don't like this one, but I think it has something to do with the sound it makes, which seems at odds with the thing it describes. Something that describes conflict and disorder shouldn't sound cute.

Brouhaha: I dislike this word because of the "haha" attached to the end, which gives it a quality very similar to kerfuffle.

Kudos: I...

On Sunday my co-best friend took me to a pizza buffet, in which I proceeded to ruin my pancreas by eating a typically American amount of pizza. (I also managed to invent a new type of pizza, made with barbecue sauce and topped with pepperoni and sausage; I called it the Boss Hog.)

Buffets have a rule, in Texas at least, that every time you...

Yesterday I turned 35 years old, and one of oldest and best friends helped me celebrate over the weekend, which, of course, is why I did not wrote a journal entry yesterday. As an aside, I refuse to call this a blog. It's a journal, or a diary. We already have perfectly good words to describe a thing in which you periodically write about your...

I record a podcast with my best friend, whom I've known for 20 years. We discuss movies, mostly, but occasionally other things. But mostly movies. I don't think we've ever had more than 12 listeners and I'd like to change that, especially since I seem to be drawing a strong Euro following. Anyway, if you'd like to hear my voice, and perhaps get a better...

Every so often I tell someone about the regrets I have for the way I treated people in the past, and one thing that they invariably say is that I shouldn't be so hard on myself. I completely disagree. I believe that I am exactly as hard on myself as I deserve, and moreover, I believe that people in general should be significantly harder on...

P.S. Thank you, lovely @chef !

@chef, I had no idea I could do that! Thanks for the heads up! @aonbheannach, I wonder why I seem to be more interesting to the Euro ladies than the American ladies. Regardless, thank you for the comments. They're greatly appreciated.

I spend a lot of time discussing things I hate, so I'd like to change the pace a bit and discuss something I love: the CBS television series Person of Interest.

First of all, as a kid growing up in the 80s, I deeply enjoyed series like Knight Rider and Airwolf, and they had one thing in common: really enjoyable violence. Airwolf, especially, was perfect...

I recently attended a fetish oriented meet and greet and met a person who described herself as a hippie dippy free spirit, and ever since then the concept of free spiritedness has been on my mind. I've often been criticized for a stubborn insistence on doing things the way I want to do them; for instance, only entering and exiting buildings through the door on...

I agree with this so much.  I feel like I’m berry much a free spirit in terms of sex and love and food etc.   but I too adore schedules and order and responsibility and people who do what they say they’re going to do. WHEN. They say they’re going to do it.

One of my pet peeves is people who pollute the shared social environment. For example, when I ride the bus and there is a person playing music with their smartphone, but using the speakers instead of a pair of headphones. That irritates me to no end. The rest of us don't particularly want to listen to your music, not necessarily because it's terrible, although it...

Yeah I have no patience for inconsiderate or stupid.

Even smart people can be inconsiderate. It's more of a lazy irresponsibility.

I have a profile on OKCupid, and about six months ago or so I actually spent the money to be able to see who likes me. Apparently, the women who like me most often are Pro Dommes seeking dedicated submissives who are willing to "donate" or "make a tribute" in their honor. Obviously, I find this deeply disappointing, and in all likelihood I doubt I'll...

I've long believed that in order to be a rock star on the order of someone like Bono or Kanye West, you need to have a gigantic ego. To be able to stand in front of thousands of people and effectively tell them, "I have something important to say and all of you need to shut up and listen" requires a person to have a...
