Ever since I made my first blog two days ago, I've been thinking of what I should talk about next in my next one. It's weird. I never thought I'd be doing something like this, but here we go again, round 2. So I've decided that this one would be about...
Sports. (Edit: So it seems that my usual habits of typing a ton came into effect here. I ended up rambling on about basketball, and right now, I'll probably leave it at that. I'm typing this here instead of at the end, so you have a good idea of what to expect below. If you don't care about basketball, scroll down to the bottom.)
First thing's first. Fuck baseball. I don't watch it, play it, care for it, nothing. Never have, never will.
Basketball, more specifically, NBA. I've been living in Los Angeles since I was 6 months old, so I can say pretty much all my life (minus 4 years in the Military). I grew up as a Laker fan, but not a hardcore one. I enjoyed watching them play, win or lose. So my #1 team would be the Lakers. My number #2 team, however, is every other team in the league.
This NBA season is the first time I have done an NBA Fantasy league, because a friend poked me enough times to actually do one. I had no clue what I was doing at first. I didn't know how anything worked. I started off just picking names that were familiar. In a league of 12, I had the 3rd pick, and my first choice was Kobe Bryant. After that, I was lost. Thank god that the list of players to choose from was ranked in some sort of order from best to worst, so for the most part, I went with that. Every pick after that was names that were either familiar, or sounded cool, and most importantly, were at the top of the list. I noticed about halfway into the picks that these players have positions, and I didn't have a center yet. I should probably pick one, huh?
So I created a team, understood the very basics of how this league thing worked, and "played" week one against an opponent (everyone in our league were either friends, or friends of friends). I lost the first week 4-5, and I thought I did alright for not really doing anything at all. Turns out, I won the next five weeks of opponents. I guess my team is good? I lost the week after that, then went on another six game win streak. I guess my team is pretty damn good! At that point, I knew what I was doing. I was trading, watching injury reports, benching players with poor shooting if I knew it would hurt my scores, so on. Then I had one injury after another, and somehow, I took a nose dive and did terribly. From a very solid 2nd place overall in the league, to a fight for 5th place. In the next 4 weeks, I went 0-3-1. Then the playoffs came around, and I lost in the first round.
Well, there goes my reign. Now I have a much better idea of what to do next year! But the whole league thing made me appreciate the individual players more then the team. I could see that as being a bad thing, but I never was a super hardcore fan of the Lakers anyways. Now, I like all the teams roughly equal, because there are a lot more good players in the NBA than I thought.
So when Dallas swept Los Angeles in the playoffs this year, I wasn't too upset. I now know that Dirk Nowitzki is a fucking beast. I'm upset at the Lakers because they gave up game 4 so easily. The first three was a fight, and I'm glad they showed effort for the majority of each game. But the last one... what the fuck was that? Now it's the NBA Finals, and I'm cheering for Dallas to take it in six over Miami. Game one was good, but still a loss. If Dallas can get game two, then they can easily win it this year.
So, sports turned into one sport. I was going to type/talk a little about soccer (Eurocup qualifiers) and mixed martial arts (UFC), but I'll save you the headache for another time. There's a lot on my mind about many things (school, losing weight, sex, Magic the Gathering to name a few), so I'll type that shit out when I feel like it.
