Nice people, also, end up worse off than mean people.

Nice people get stepped on now. We have evolved that "mean" people by our standards are still operating above the law and in-line with animalistic decencey. Thus, mean people suffer no natural recourse from their mean (as perceived by other people) actions.
Like stupid people, mean people have an incredible advantage--if one takes advantage of everything that one can get, and practice greed at all times, then one can easily survive and procreate. Being mean is the natural thing to do. True altruism is irrational.
Nice people and nice acts often go unrewarded, because of this.
