You know what I really don't like? There's these elections for Undergraduate Student Council. There are basically two parties running for all the positions. I'll simplify it a little, but there's the white party and the minority party. Truly. So, basically, we have the white party. They advocate stuff like money management, working with local government and bringing more food and (gasp!) a bar to campus.
Then there's the 'minority' party. They call themselves "Student! Power" or something ungrammatical. They call for more diversity and whiny stuff about how minorities are being marginalized. It's basically reverse racism. They make such a big stink about every little thing. On Tuesday, they had a big circle blocking everyone going down Bruin Walk. Today, there were five students lying across it forcing people to walk around. This is their tactic to get people to vote for them?
There was a guy that I was talking with today, who had a S!P shirt on, but the front and back were crossed out and the back had "stop racism" on it. His friend had one similarly crossed saying "oppose stupidity" on it. I was walking past, and I told him that I liked his shirt--because, truly, the S!P group does nothing to help their cause. Some guy that was arguing with him intejected: "Yeah! White Power" totally sarcastically.
Obviously he didn't get it. It's not white power, or black power, or hispanic power. Whatever. It's just about power--get as much as you can. Why did my liking of the guy's shirt make me a white supremacist?
Oh, I stuck around for a bit afterwards, just to see what was going on. I agreed with the guy with the shirt when he said "I judge people on their ability and capabilities and performance, not their color." And the guy who yelled at me told us "Then you're not good people." WHAT!?
Just over a month... that's all I have to get through.
