For My Brother, On What Would Have Been His Birthday
(copyright 2026 by Michael Walker)
I will not say heaven
Because I do not believe
In heaven
But I hope
You are in some place
Heavenly
Far from these fast cars
And the
Double lives we all seem to lead.
I will not say hell
Because I do not believe
In hell either
The shared fires of this world
Are enough torment
And the fagots of judgment
Seemed endless...
I hope
You are in some place
Years from any such fable
Or real suffering
I raise a glass to you
My brother
On what would have been
Your sixty-third year
You added your light
To the sum of light
And I do not think such lights
Ever truly
Disappear...
