so my weekend has started. at least weekend from Wegmans. the full-time overnight cashier took Thursday night through Saturday night off....and here's the breakdown of who else knows the overnight job...
me.
the previous full-time overnight cashier, now the pricing coordinator.
a girl trained as an overnight, now full-time in the dairy department.
a girl trained as an overnight, now part-time in the pharmacy, won't work overnights after being passed over for the full-time position.
what does this mean? I get all those nights to work. which is nice due to consistency and the hours...but sucks because, with the subbing, it means I potentially have NO days off this week! and the subbing can take a lot out of you as well!
oh well, its a paycheck.
I only wish the store I work at realized a few things. we need cashiers to work at 6 AM and cashiers that can work past midnight. to fill those positions, we have....
about 2 or 3 people who can work at 6 AM. one works the majority of the shifts....and is turtle slow. she scans, oh, 10 items per minute. if you want to know what that's like....go >beep< then count to 6, then >beep<. that's her speed.
I am one of 3 who has availability past midnight. and one of those other 2....she's also a 10 item per minute person.
so what do the slow cashiers mean (since the goal is to scan at 16 or higher items per minute). they get lines in a heartbeat. which means the overnight (IE, me) has to go on register and get everything through. so I get to pick up the slack for the slow ones. and BTW, me on a slow day....I scan (if I have big orders constantly) at 24 items per minute. small orders....I've hit 64 items per minute. my average is 30+ items per minute. so I am at least 3 times faster than these people!
so our store has hired a bunch of new cashiers. nice....EXCEPT THEY ARE ALL MINORS!!!! which means no working before 6:30 AM or after midnight. so basically we didn't hire anyone to fill our needs.
nice!
in other news....um, well, I finally got sleep after a few weeks of insomnia. the entire "go to sleep at 11 PM and spontaneously wake up at 2:30 AM and not fall asleep again until 5:30 AM unless I have to work or get called to sub" was getting tedious. so what did I do? I woke up at 5 AM Friday, stayed awake, had the subbing (7th grade science....little rat bastards!), took a nap for 1 1/2 hours, worked until 2 AM....and stayed awake until 5:30 AM. figure since I was falling back asleep then anyways. slept until 5:00 PM the next day or so. felt good!
anyone else have suggestions for beating the insomnia? and bite me about the Mt. Dew...not going to change that habit!

Scary how your sleep is going to be chopped up like that. That can't be good for your health.
