time for another blog....why? because I want to.
so what can i say? last week, since I had a day off right before my overnight shift (as well as getting out early the day before), I decided to clean up downstairs. here's the deal.....
our house really lacks storage space. add to that the fact that my step-father and mother are pack rats who won't admit it....there's a problem. the closest we have to storage is the downstairs laundry room. however, since there is a box of books and other stuff there, its full. I've tried cleaning things up before...it doesn't work. I cleaned off the work bench, my step-father puts stuff right on it.
in fact, the only reason why he has nothing in my room currently is because I threatened to light it on fire if he put anything in my room. yes, I have pyro tendencies.
well, when I moved back, I had collected "stuff" from, well, living on my own. dishes, cookware, all sorts of stuff. some of the cookware has gone to use here since I had stuff my family did not have and could have used. why store something they can use, right? other stuff includes cleaning supplies, office "toys", all sorts of stuff. however, since I had to get everything together fast and put away, it all got kind of piled into the downstairs room (which was my bedroom at one time).
so last week, I took everything out, rearranged stuff, threw out 2 garbage bags of stuff (considering I did a previous cleaning, doing good). got clothes together to donate, all sorts of stuff. and put thing away in a more orderly manner.
so now everything is put together in a better order. I also seperated out "my stuff" from "their stuff". which should make moving much easier.
well, (and to the point of this blog), while cleaning, I was able to move my models to an area I could reach them. so now I can start working on my models again. yay me!
so what is first up? a fiber-optic lighted Star Trek Deep Space 9 model. I have about 3 of these models. and a few others. the nice part is that I can convert a Deep Space 9 model to a lighted one fairly easily. all I would have to do is buy the fiber optic strands and wiring.
so, since I have three, here's how they are being built:
1 will be made using the presribed coloration of the instructions....lots of greys, tans, and such.
1 will be made using various shades of black. one of the reasons is I think it will look cool lighted up.
1 will be made using metallic colors. silver, pewter, stuff like that.
again, I think it will look cool. although it also means drilling over 1,000 holes using a hand-held pin vise and #80 drill bit (0.0135 diameter drill bit). not as thin as human hair...maybe twice the diameter. yeah, small holes.
other models include F-117A (stealth fighter), Blackbird, F-15 Eagle and a Blue Angels jet. I want to do the Blue Angels jet in metallic colors as well (metallic blue, gold, and silver). other models include Star Trek ships and Babylon-5 ships/space stations.
yeah, I think that's about it. I plan to start drilling holes and doing base coats for one Star Trek model on Thursday. keep in mind I can spend hours working on one section no problem. oddly enough, I would normally get frustrated taking so long. but for these, I don't.
yeah, I'm a geek.
so, um, anyone here have tips for wiring and soldering? that's the stuff I really don't know too well (unfortunately). thanks!

Good luck with all that.

Where exactly do you place the lights in the models?
