Just finished up This is England.
I didn't understand a word of it. British people should put subtitles in their movies so that I can watch them. Yes. For me.

Good Friday night. The woman is out with friends (not discussing what happened last night, if I know her as well as I think I do. And I do.) and I just finished up a book, too. The Film Club by David Gilmour was a relatively quick read-- a memoir about having your 16 year old son stay at home with you watching movies. Instead of going to school.

Imagine this:
"I want you to watch three movies a week with me. I pick them. It's the only education you're going to get."

This is what David Gilmour said to his kid Jesse at the at the age of 16. Really. I wish my folks had said that to me. I hated school, at least until I got to college. And even then I received a year's suspension for bad grades. I failed the tenth grade. Did it twice. Almost did senior year twice, too. I hated it.

Anyway, the book moves on. They watch three movies a week. Lots of insights and anecdotes about these movies, too, as this guy watches his kid grow up and become someone he can be proud of.

The book did to me what I expected-- it made me want to watch movies.

It's not a great book, by any stretch. He writes about his son sometimes as if he's retarded. He calls him honey, he goes on about how beautiful his son is. It does manage to get a little precious. But whatever, I enjoyed it. I'm glad I read it.

Yeah.
