I once conducted an interview with the president of TESOL International (Teaching English as a Second Language); I had been reading how the organization found themselves in the tricky spot of teaching sex education in English to young women in some places because the native language had no words for anything involved with sex, as it was "taboo." The English teachers from the organization were doing something potentially dangerous by breaking this cultural law, but felt the need was paramount to combat the AIDS epidemic ravaging the continent. Just giving the people words for sexual organs was a violation of this traditional thought and belief. As a general rule, TESOL stays away from "changing someone's culture," so I asked when is it acceptable to combat and attempt to change someone's culture?
She said: When not doing so will lead the entire culture to death. It is better to change certain aspects and preserve the whole, than to allow traditional ignorance and brutality to decimate the people.
I think people are prone to ignorance and tradition and brutality. It is beyond sad.

Never heard of the family...*chills* You know how I feel about that. My stomach is churning reading that story.
My mom volunteered in Uganda this year with her church. As dedicated as she is, I respect her for not going over there to preach. She was there to help revitalize an orphanage and offer medical services as that is the field of her expertise. She's selling off all her stuff and downsizing a bit so she can go back and continue her work there. I had heard about the homosexual trials and asked her on her return about them. She didn't witness anything, but after asking around a bit, she heard stories of people being murdered just for being associated with them. Pretty scary shit.
Moussu T e lei Jovents makes me think of sitting beneath foreign skies, sipping in the air, the drink, the silken tongue of a new land. I love those nights.....
Pat Robertson makes me want to vomit.
