How strange is it that I dreamed about John Coltrane last night? That has never happened before! surreal

dannydmc:
BTW,
Wo ist Sie in Deutchland?

I love the country, although I've only been there once. German is one of the two languages I need to learn for my eventual PhD work. I'm a bit nervous; I learnt more of the language during my few days in Munich than I did in all my time spent in German class, making me think that I'm not all that good at class-room learned languages.

And my heart goes out to you about the Euro Cup finals. I was watching the game with my Cousin, and we were rooting for Germany like crazy.
dannydmc:

I'm German/Irish/Polish myself; my Irish side comes out the strongest in personality and looks, but I've always been a bit of a Germanophile as well. So, yah, when National Soccer comes up, Germany's one of the team's I'll always root for.
I remember my trip to Munich in '03; what struck me the most is that I grew up in Wisconsin (a state which is more heavily German than any other in the country) and it amazed me how much the people of Munich looked and acted like people back home. I was always half expecting some guy to come up to me and ask me my opinion on how the Packer's were going to do the next season. It was almost surreal (My cousin had a Prof at school from Germany who confirmed this; he was in Green Bay and kept going off about how he felt like he was right back in Germany the entire time).
Great country, I really want to get back sometime.

You're welcome. I guess germans got cured of their superiority complex the hard way. It wasn't without side effects either. It's only in the last couple of years, actually starting with the last Soccer WC when people started putting flags on their cars and balconies, that our relationship with our own nationality is somewhat normalizing.

And thanks for making an effort to understand.

What fun. Hendrix was amazing. Don McLean' tune used to be a huge fave of mine when I was little. Some of the tunes like the John denver or Three Dog Night, and Peter, Paul & Mary I always associate with roller skating. Never heard the Nitty gritty song though. Thanks for sharing.

Actually, I'm not sure either. There are laws prohibiting the use of nazi symbols. But I don't really think the Deutschlandlied is part of that. There are not different versions just those three verses. As I said in the thread the first two were dropped and are not used anymore. If you use them, over here at least, people will likely think you are a nazi or at least very very right-wing, as only nazis will sing those verses. Germans are pretty humorless on this particular issue.
erleichda:
Can you read german? Here's the official history of the song.
The nazis used the first verse only, the other verses were verboten, and they added the Horst-Wessel-Lied, the SA song, after the first verse. That became nazigermany's hymn.
After the war the allies put the hymn on the index. Adenauer fought to have it back as the national anthem using only the third verse.
Still doesn't answer the question whether it's illegal to sing the first verse today, but I doubt it. Otherwise it would have been mentioned.

You learn something new every day. smile Though I'm pretty sure I've had this in school. Just too long ago.

I'm a little disappointed, to be honest, after watching the game.. don't think Germany deserved it. Well, perhaps from the scoring-more-goals-than-the-other-team point of view. But I just thought Turkey played a lot better.
hunkpapa:
Well, Germany improved in the second half, but I didn't think they would get much worse. But yeah, that final goal was very nicely done.

Bullshit

Take a bunch of attractive people and put them in jobs they'd typically not be able achieve, portray them in positions they'd never be able to achieve in such a short span of time, place them in apartments and houses that they'd never be able to afford, and what do you get?

American children that will hate themselves and never be satisfied unless they've...
